Open the jewel case and in the top right hand corner there will be a little sticker saying "half life 2 key" and the key no. underneath it, it's only a sticker so you can just peel it off whilst pretending to read the back.

I didn't know they made cd cases out of paper, wtf? I'm talking about the hl2 cases that are on display and sometimes inside they have a little sticker on the top right hand corner giving you the cd-key, you can peel that off, or write it down/take a photo of it with a camera phone. Btw, the CD case might differ from the DVD case, i dunno, but maybe thats what you were getting confused about.
