They are a dime a dozen around here. I know a guy with an S13 avec CA18DET in it, he bought the car like that for 4000 bucks. And house, don't buy a focus. They have tranny problems, the rear drums are hub-centric (making brake jobs expensive), they have a habit of breaking timing belts (and they are an interference motor, so borken belt = bent valves)

Not sure about in Alberta, But in Ontario you can find yourself a nice 240sx with an SR20 in it for about 4-5000 dollars. Fun car to drive, not TOO bad on gas, and very reliable. If you do find one, look at the upper shock towers under the hood and in the truck for signs of rust. Also check out the spare tire bay, and the frame of course. Japanese cars are generally reliable.
