I was actually compairing west coast powerviolence to gore grind in terms of "gimmickyness" (word?). The boogie boards, beach balls, and music are just as gimmicky and lame as a lot of gore grind is, with what i've seen from overempasis on death as a theme (especially on album covers), typical generic "Ivy" sytle band logos (if you don't know what im talking about, look at Phlegm Throwers logo and tell me that 10000x bands in the genre haven't done something similar.) But I suppose your right, maybe there is goregrind out there thats semi-tolerable. Im sorry your in the middle of the West Coast PV explosion. I read the Bastard Noise/Eric Wood interview and I know Kenyons view on powerviolence today. Something along the lines of (quote); "Power violence is dead. Anyone claiming the "power violence" description for their own is cancer." And that is part way true- the power violence of that era is long gone. Stuff like despise you is dead, replaced with shit like magrudergrind (fucking horrid). Its all violence, no power. The slow sludgy parts are gone, replaced almost entirely by PLAY FAST, NOT GOOD bull shit. It makes me glad I live in houston- even though KS is dead (and so is MGR, good dudes though, I will agree.) there is new shit coming out all the time that is actually good, as opposed to LA's "Apathetic Ronald Mcdonald" (which im very suprised ever made it to a VINYL pressing, even if it was a split with an equally shitty band) And we still have Hatred Surge. Also check newjack bands from Houston- Gay Marriage (pure thrash assault- members of 50/50) and Lethal Enforcers (northside power violence). And as for MGR, Alex is still doing hatred surge (thank god), but hung up knuckle scraper (split with uzi suicide will be their last release), but he is also doing a project with max ward (spazz, scholastic deth and 625 fame) Brian and Casey from LBAL and Carl from our turn called "Mindless Mutants" out on dangerously small records. PLEASE don't kid your self for a second here: Crossover is not new to me. I compair gore grind to bad death metal merely as a joke; musically they are not similar. But what bothers me about goregrind is that most bands depend on digital effects (rompeprop vocals) and shitty drum machines to make their band sound more "Brutal". Its just a shitty subgenre. If i'm going to listen to something gimmicky, i'd listen to west coast powerviolence (crossed out/mitb era, in reference to the shirts with flowers on them that say "I LOVE PV" that slap a ham put out, and spazz). And simply because I do not like goregrind, i am saying, and will continue to say, that all of it is a pile of steaming dog shit. And just as a suggestion; emmerse yourself in more gulf coast grindcore.
