if you missed that part where the alien tripod stabbed some guy and drained his blood than you missed a very important part, also the part when they were picking up the people and not killing them, instead they were being harvested. This was about 2/3 into the movie and the tripods were probably running low on juice and needed human fluids for sustenance. The aliens overlooked the fact that america had become a disease ridden cesspool, and possibly other places in the world such as Africa, the maritimes in Canada, Sweden and India, so in the end they all caught all sorts of fucking diseases and died. The ending which had the narrator explain briefly, in a nutshell what happend, and the camera zooms into the droplet of water almost makes it seem like human beings are nothing but another kind of lifeform in the vast universe and are indeed totally insignificant.
