Problem is serverside. If you're playing 1.6, search around the forums for some help on that. If you're playing CSS, then forget about it. The codecs required for good HLSS sound haven't been updated for the Source engine.

To play an HL1 mod OTHER than ESF, you need HL1 installed. Since you've registered your Steam account with an HL2 key, HL1 should be in your list of games, ready to be installed. Install it, run it once, and shove the mod folder into the half-life directory. If you want to play ESF, you can't. Why? You can't. Don't bother asking about ESF.

Are you even AWARE that sv_cheats 1 must be enabled for the script to work? Seriously, go HERE EDIT: Oops, didn't see that you were just there before you posted this thread, which is made of rage and PHAIL!!!

Just saw Dadelius (sP?) SourceForts sv_cheats 1 rage. This stuff really works well!!! Random ignition of hapless victims Unexplained deaths (to the victims, Dadelius uses subtitles in the vid to notify us of what he's doing) Resupply boxes now have AIDS!! (hurt.cfg) holyshit.cfg (NUKE!!)
