If you were NOT convicted for something with an assault suffix then you either had a shitty judge and an idiot that was representing the guy you beat the crap out of or the DA just didn't give a shit if the city was pressing charges. The simple fact that you hit someone and did them bodily harm ON PURPOSE is enough to get you fined and/or jail time for assault. Seeing as how you got fined, I'd say you went down for assault. Even if you didn't know this, the fact that you caused bodily injury and were fined $750 means you got found guilty of assault. You didn't get away with anything. Next time you go to court for something like this it will be more than a fine. The time after that will be more time in jail than your previous stay. These things don't just go away, they accumulate.
