Seriously, why a quad core? Dual core powerhouses are what perform best in games at this moment. I'm not a super movie maker dude that needs to encode his files in under 5 minutes. You're being quite irrational. An E8400 will last a good while. Oh, and the E8400 now dropped down to $175 and the E8500 is now $190. One more thing. The CPU won't provide an incredible advantage in gaming performance. The video card will. Then again, an E8400 has gotten over 20 FPS of an advantage in some games than the Athlon 64 X2 6400+. That's due to the fact that the E8400 has a beefy L2 cache and has 45nm technology.

Are you saying that I have to "future-proof" my rig? That never works. If I were to build, it would be primarily for games. I don't need a billion things going on.

Now wait... Why would I want a quad core? Just for a 10 fps boost? Games haven't been able to take advantage of all cores. They rely on higher clock speed and L2 cache size more than more cores. Besides, the X4 9850 is $205. I could be getting more frames with a P35 + E8400 for less money. Apparently, AMD is not the smarter choice at the moment.

Well, you see, I hate nVidia aswell (I really want a 4850), but I'm looking at an E8400 (45nm, it overclocks from 3 to 4GHz on stock cooling). It's only $180 on Newegg and I'd hate to say that it's kicking AMD up the asshole. An Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition costs $160 or so on Newegg. Read those benches and tell me which one is the smarter choice.

That's sweet, but I don't think that buying a Phenom is the best choice in the world. I've read all the benches.. I'm not saying it's a bad rig, though.
