8400 is a pile of crap... don't waste your money on it. The 8600 GT DDR3 is not bad, I would not get anything less than that. If you're going to spend like 2000 then get a notebook with an 8800M GTX.

Definitely get a desktop if you can but if you have to have a notebook then look into the Sager NP5793, equip that with 4 GB of ram and an 8800M GTX and it will be as powerful as the average gamer's desktop and allow to run most games on high settings/high res.
