That sucks man. When your driving does the the engine temp get higher? Do you lose oil pressure? Grinding noises usually are due to a lack of proper lubrication. You can definitely visually inspect the belts on your engine, however I do not recommend taking them off...it is a royal pain in the ass to put them back on.
