Al Jazeera reports that the S. Korean hostage was executed...
al qaeda just beheaded him. http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/06/22/iraq.hostage/index.html http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2004/WORLD/meast/06/22/iraq.hostage/story.korean.hostage.1.jpg SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- Iraqi insurgents have killed the South Korean civilian they were holding hostage, according to the South Korean Foreign Ministry. A spokesman said the U.S. military found the body and notified the South Korean military, which in turn notified the South Korean Embassy in Baghdad. "It breaks our heart that we have to announce this unfortunate news," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Shin Bong-Kil in Seoul. "A body identified to be of an Asian man was found between Baghdad and Fallujah. Afterwards, the photo of the body was e-mailed to the South Korean Embassy and was confirmed to be the body of Kim Sun Il." Kim, 33, was seized Thursday in Fallujah, west of Baghdad. He was an Arabic speaker and evangelical Christian who had worked in Iraq for a year as a translator for a South Korean firm supplying goods to the U.S. military. The Arab television network Al-Jazeera broadcast a video that was very similar to the first portion of one it aired earlier this year before the graphic beheading of American businessman Nicholas Berg, with armed and masked insurgents standing behind their blindfolded captive, who kneels on the floor. "To the South Korean citizens: We warned you," one of the militants says, reading a statement. "This is the result of your own doings. Enough lies, or cheatings. "Your soldiers here are not for the sake for the Iraqis, but they are here for the cursed America." Han Sung-joo, the South Korean ambassador to the United States, told CNN that Kim's death was "a very deplorable event," and he took issue with the militants' claims that the Koreans were not helping the Iraqis. "They are not correct," Han said. "We are trying to help the Iraqis. ... The Iraqis like us, and they appreciate our role there." President Bush also condemned the killing. "The free world cannot be intimidated by the brutal actions of these barbaric people," he said. Kim, Berg and Paul Johnson -- who was killed last week by his captors in Saudi Arabia -- were all wearing orange jumpsuits similar to those worn by prison inmates in the United States. Al-Jazeera did not broadcast video of Kim's killing. The insurgents, in a video broadcast Sunday, had given South Korea 24 hours to cancel plans to send 3,000 additional troops to Iraq, threatening to behead Kim if it did not. In the video, Kim cried in English, "Please get out of here. I don't want to die. ... Your life is important, but my life is important." The South Korean government Tuesday urged businesses with civilians in Iraq to remove them. Shin said South Korea had been trying to establish contact with as many countries and organizations as possible that could help win Kim's release. He declined to comment on whether South Korea had direct contact with the kidnappers. South Korean government officials gave numerous interviews to Arab media appealing for Kim's release, Shin said. Kim was an Arabic speaker and evangelical Christian who had worked in Iraq for a year as a translator for a South Korean firm supplying goods to the U.S. military. South Korea plans to send 3,000 troops to Erbil in the northern Kurdish region of Iraq. Military officials say about half are combat troops trained to protect the rest, who are to help rebuild Iraq, distribute aid and train security forces. In the face of the captors' threat to behead the man, the South Korean government Tuesday reaffirmed the deployment plans. About 670 South Korean military medics and engineers in southern Iraq since May last year will move to Erbil to join the main force, which Seoul sees as a difficult but vital gesture to the United States, an ally with 37,500 troops in the South to deter North Korea. "President Roh [Moo-hyun] instructed related ministries to explain to the Iraqi people that our government is sending troops to Iraq to focus on reconstruction efforts there without engaging in hostile acts there," presidential spokesman Yoon Tai-young told reporters before the death was announced. Vice Foreign Minister Choi Young-jin told reporters in Seoul, "There is no change in the government's spirit and position that it will send troops to Iraq to help establish peace and rebuild Iraq." Once the troops are in place, South Korea will be the largest coalition partner in Iraq after the United States and Britain. (Full story)

**BREAKING NEWS** Militants threaten to behead South Korean hostage
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/06/20/iraq.main/index.html Militants threaten to behead South Korean hostage Sunday, June 20, 2004 Posted: 6:45 PM EDT (2245 GMT) http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2004/WORLD/meast/06/20/iraq.main/story.korean.hostage.1.jpg South Korean hostage Kim Sun-il sits in front of his captors. (CNN) -- The Arabic-language television network Al-Jazeera broadcast a videotape Sunday night of a man identified as a South Korean hostage whose captors threatened to behead him unless his government quits the U.S.-led coalition occupying Iraq. On the videotape the man cried in English, "Please get out of here. I don't want to die. ... Your life is important, but my life is important." The South Korean Foreign Ministry confirmed that the man shown in the videotape was Kim Sun-il, 33, who works for a trading company. It is not known when or how he was taken hostage. The Foreign Ministry planned an emergency meeting Monday morning to discuss Seoul's reaction to the development and steps to take toward Kim's release. An official with the South Korean Embassy in Washington said South Korea has about 600 troops in the country and plans to send another 3,000. The video shows Kim seated in front of three men whose faces are covered with scarves. Two of the men hold rifles; the third delivered an ultimatum to South Korea's government. "We ask the government of South Korea and the people of Korea to pull their forces out of Iraq and not to send additional forces," the man said. "Otherwise, we will send this hostage's head back to them and, God willing, we will kill more of your troops in Iraq. And you have 24 hours, starting tonight." In Baghdad, South Korea's ambassador to Iraq said he was aware of the tape and had no comment. Al-Jazeera's editor in chief, Ahmed al-Sheikh, said the tape was left Sunday at the network's office in Baghdad and that he verified it was authentic before broadcasting segments of it. He did not broadcast the entire tape because some of it was repetitious, he said. Weekend violence scattered Seven Iraqi police officers and 10 civilians were wounded in a 45-minute gunbattle that followed a failed attempt to assassinate Iraq's minister of health in western Baghdad, Iraqi Police Col. Azher Kamal said Sunday. The fight began early Saturday evening when a roadside bomb exploded as a convoy carrying Iraqi Minister of Health Alaa Alwan passed by, Kamal said. No one was injured in the explosion, but when Iraqi police rushed to the scene near the Alja'afer police station, they were attacked by a group of insurgents with small arms and grenades, Kamal said. In Tikrit, north of Baghdad, a leading member of the City Council, Izz Aldeen Al-Bayati, was shot to death by insurgents Sunday as he was on his way into town, according to another council member. Al-Bayati's driver and bodyguard were wounded, the council member said. In another incident Sunday, an Iraqi police officer and four civilians were wounded Sunday morning when a bomb damaged a storefront near Ahrar Bridge in central Baghdad, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said. In Anbar province, a Marine assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in action Saturday while conducting security and stability operations, according to a military spokesman. Other developments Repairs to pipelines sabotaged last week in the south of Iraq have not been completed, and the flow of crude oil from Iraq had not resumed, a coalition spokesman said Sunday. As of late Sunday afternoon, repairs to the 42- and 48-inch pipelines were still under way, and there was no estimation as to when they would be completed, the spokesman said. Attacks by Iraqi insurgents damaged the pipelines Tuesday and Wednesday. Exports are expected to resume when the pipelines are fixed.

Police to let England fans smoke dope
http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2004270693,00.html Police to let England fans smoke dope http://images.thesun.co.uk/picture/0,,2004270282,00.jpg Puff guy ... England fan smokes cannabis Picture: REUTERS From NICK PARKER in Portugal ENGLAND fans will be allowed to smoke dope before Sunday’s crunch clash with France — to keep them calm. Cops in Lisbon plan to crack down on drunk supporters while turning a blind eye to those spotted puffing on a spliff. Pot-smoking fans have been assured they will not be arrested, cautioned — or even have their drugs confiscated. Last night experts said the Portuguese police’s “Here We Blow” policy would reduce chances of a punch-up between rival fans. Alan Buffry of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance said: “If people are drinking they lose control, if they smoke cannabis they don’t. “Alcohol makes fans fight. But cannabis smokers will be shaking hands and singing along together.” Dutch police used a similar policy in Euro 2000 and England’s hooligan element were too stoned to fight. A Lisbon police spokeswoman said: “If people cause a problem through drugs and become a menace then police will take action. But when this doesn’t happen why should the police be the ones making the fuss?” More than 600 officers will be on duty for England’s opening group game at Lisbon’s Stadium of Light. Fans who seem to be drunk may be breath-tested and refused entry.
