** UPDATE **

http://www.boingboing.net/2005/07/28/microsoft_genuine_ad.html

Has presented a fix for this.

Also one of our forum users posted a even easier fix:

1. Open IE

2. Click on Tools

3. Click on Internet options

4. Click to the Programs tab

5. Click on the Manage Add-ons button.

6. Select Windows Genuine Advantage

7. Click Disable

8. Done, now you can do Windows updates again.

Microsoft has now offically started blocking pirated copies of Windows from using the Windows Update feature. With the latest Windows update it forces a new installer and new validation tool, once this is installed, when you try to do a Windows update again, you get the message " [ Support ID: 0x8DDD1003 ] To get updates, you must first validate your Windows software. Validation assures that you are using an authentic and fully licensed copy of Windows."

Now I don't know the figures, but I'd assume there are probably more pirated copies of Windows out there then there are legit, specifically in Asian countries like China. So now we have a very unsecure Operating System that constantly needs updates/fixes to prevent millions of computers from being taken over by viruses/worms, that can no longer update. I'm sure those kiddies who run botnets are happy.

Good job Microsoft. :)

Microsoft must be the biggest cunts in the world. Ever. Problem is, they supply the only OS that doesnt suck major balls.

Tequila']goddamnit... lol

Lol @ Teq being a Pirate YARRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Windows XP Pro 100% legit w00t.

Why is this Microsoft's problem? This is like stealing a car without brakes and then getting upset when you crash that shit into a wall. Why should Microsoft help out people who steal from them?

Microsoft aint got no competition, makes their software extremely expensive, and now is forcing people into buying it if they dont want bloated software, way to go.

And some stupid microsoft fanboys defend them, don't you people have any pride ? Would you like to buy a piece of shit car 500.000$ just because the company that sells it controls the whole market ?

Good point, but it is in the best interest of the Internet as a whole that this does not happen. This could really increase the number of zombied computers when the next big Windows hole/exploit comes out and half the world cannot update. Even legit users could be effected by this when their ISP is overrun by zombied computers that are being used for spam, ddos, or other harmful things. So yes, Microsoft has every right to do so, but this is still not a good move.

That all being said, I'm sure there is already a work around to this on the net.

That all being said' date=' I'm sure there is already a work around to this on the net.[/quote']

It's a never ending circle.

I agree that MS is stupid for this though. There are tons of people/companies that had to resort to cracked WIN proggys when microsoft support wouldn't give them a CD-key just to install on more then 5 computers.

Half the people that made the upgrade from WinME to XP used cracked discs. :drama:

-Edit

I meant to say a lot of people also used cracked versions to upgrade thier family members pcs. This will be what either makes or breaks Microsoft IMHO.

People don't like being forced into situations, this will blow up in thier face in one way or another.

This is the reason why I WOULD use Linux, but linux has so many flaws, especially in the hardware side.

My Windows copy atm is OEM, so if my hard drive crashes or I buy a new one, im going to have to either beg for a re-activation code from customer support or fork out another £60/$100 whatever.

Microsoft rage me so much.

For me, I'll either switch to linux or buy an old copy of XP for a major supplier who's trying to offload before Longhorn is released.

Most likely, I'll take the Linux route though, as I'm fucking sick of Microsoft.

lovely, im enjoying a hard assfucking right now.

im using a cracked copy im not sure yet tho, i entered a CD key but i downloaded the program what happens when you let it verify your install?

if it says its cracked does it lock your windows perminantly so you have to reinstall? or does it just say you cant update cause you owned windows with a crack.

Well I guess this is a mixed issue. For one, Microsoft has every right to do this since you are using a pirated copy, but then again it might just blow up in their face as someone pointed out. Personally, if you have the money, just buy it.

Let's see here. Microsoft's products are extremely overpriced, Windows Xp home was 200$ when it first came out, people who owned windows ME or 98 were practically FORCED to upgrade since the 9x OS's were total garbage. On the other hand, Linux offered free operating systems and software. So why should people be forced to dish out insane amounts of money for Microsoft's unethical business practices? Gates is already the richest man on earth, why the fuck does he want people to fuel his monopoly even more? give the other guys a chance at least.

In the end, MS really isn't helping anyone, they're just patching up an operating system that came out 4 years ago and is easily exploitable.

I'm not sure how the validation is done, but it said that I had the real version on my pirated corporate edition of Windows XP.

I'd suggest some people try it with the corporate edition. It logically seems like it'd be a lot harder to detect a pirated Windows with the corporate version.

Pick a distro and run with it!

I work at a computer shop and the authentication thing is a complete pain in the ass. I have many unsuspecting customers who are coming in and wondering why we aren't doing Windows Updates on their systems (standard procedure). The general computing populus is unaware of what "using my friends Windows XP [corp] CD" really will start doing to them. One work around is to download the updates manually (they are typically KB somthing.exe files) and installing them one by one, but if I miss one and that lack of an update gets exploited, it makes us repair guys look bad.

Needless to say I agree with the community, more and more zombie / hacked / infected computers are going to be out there and make the internet miserable for everyone. These exploited PCs are going to bring money to the repair business, but are also going to drop user confidence and leave more room for faux "security" products to come out.

i guess im going back to windows 3.x lol i miss the little sking game in the old os and having bigfoot eat me if i die
i have been using a hacked (err cracked) version of XP which im sure at least 40% of users alive are doing as well. I havent been able to use windows update for a long time now obviously because i dont have the key code or whatever the number is called. I think this has been a problem for a couple months, im not sure why they are just now releasing this info (besides trying to piss off the intraweb, which will result in hackers owning their site probably... maybe they are doing this to try to get hackers to test a new security issue)

Well i work at a... lets say and ordanary office building. the place is loaded with dell computers. If you can find the dell xp cd that came with that komputer then ur golden. All you have to do is copy down the cd-key number on the side of the case( its a colorfull sticker BUT ITS A FUCKING SECURITY STICKER SO DONT PEAL IT K.) just copy it down.

The reason they put that sticker there is if you have to format... the cd-key that is on the sticker has never been used... so if you know that the dell ur taking the key from has been formatted or its just a very old computer then the key is probley usless. like me and lots of people here, its not hard to come by a dell and find its bundled software laying near by... and the comouters at my work all have XP pro.... and a lot of ones people have in there house holds are probly home edition.

ok, i have a really old dell computer, a '98 with 233mhz, well i installed XP from the 8in1 CD using the option #5 DELL (OEM) and up intill today it still works and validates correctly with no problem. The thing is, if its a DELL and u use the DELL OEM, it wont ask for ACTIVATION upon a new install.

my other computer was installed using the same cd except with option #1, MSDN, on a home built computer. It installed with no problem and no activation using a MSDN Serial, but now with the freekin GENUINE ADV. it say to contact my sys. admin because im using a vol. license ver. NO DUH I know that.

Now, my Office 2003 Pro aint legit either, but in a way it is. It was obtained from a University and during instillation, u dont have to type a CD key. With the GENUINE ADV, if i click HOME USER, it says its a bad key, if I select BUSINESS, I GET THE GREEN LIGHT!!!

What I have learned is that if you use a COPP CD key and find out the ORGINAZTION it was registered to and type that in during install. It will VALIDATE.

ALSO, if you install OEM DELL on any DELL PC, it will VALIDATE.

LASTLY, If you use OEM on a NON DELL, but get a OEM CD KEY off a PC in a store, it WILL validate.

HOPE THIS ANSWERS ANY QUESTIONS

Well the main reason a lot of people dont go Linux is because basic users are never going to work out how to use it: Linux is definitly designed for advanced users, and even though it has a manual, it's not going anywhere until they really dub it down for your average joe.

They also need to encourage major hardware manufacturers to develop Linux drivers for their stuff too.
