The main subject of the story seems like he was just a crazy fuck. This also covers a few other cases briefly where people were trying to use the internet to extort money out of businesses by hacking them, ddos or just using these tatics to take out a fellow competor in the Internet business world. This appears to be a growing problem.
August 8, 200519 yr That guy was pretty dumb to think he could send all those e-mails and get away with what he was demanding, how would he get the money? Why do most people think they're incincible, and won't get caught? It's more of stupidity than anything...
August 9, 200519 yr Quote basement stocked with parts for makeshift hand grenades and ingredients for ricin, one of the most potent and lethal biological toxins one crazy fucker! Pretty amazing he was able to evade the company and federal investigators for some time. He seriously must be screwed up in the head to think that he could actually get away with something like that.

I've read several other articles on the matter, and the point is, the fear of having your company shut down by anonnymous criminals isn't the least bit unbelieveable. It's more cost effective, for a company who may rely on e-commerce for the main chunk of their profit, to pay a few hundred thousand dollars rather than risk the loss of $1,000,000 for a few days of transactions and loss of their customer base. Although he was a jackass for letting himself get tracked like this, the theory of e-extortion is amazing. He's just too stupid to do it right.
