Posted August 30, 200519 yr The shit is on its way from newegg. How long do you think it will last till I have to make a major upgrade? Specs; ~AMD Athlon 4000+ San Diego ~2 GB Ocz (Dual Channel) Platinum RAM ~BFG Tech 7800GTX 256 MB ~Western Digital 74 GB Raptor HDD ~Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS ~Epox PCI-E Ultra 939 Mobo (no SLI) What do you think? When am I gonna have to pour more money into this bitch? Dont be jews and say I am bragging, I just want your expert opinions, this is my first build.
August 31, 200519 yr Depends on how frustrated you get when better software and hardware comes out and your rig chugs. But before you spend money on a new build in the future, upgrade hard drive space first, 74 GB is not huge nowadays
August 31, 200519 yr There isn't really a way to tell. You need a bigger HD that's for sure. Your RAM is good. Depending on what you plan on using it for makes a big diffence. If it's for gaming I'd say about 18 months for a major update and that's if you get a bigger HD.
August 31, 200519 yr only problem I see is the hard drive and the video card.. i have the same MB for my card and my comp can barley handle games that are easily played
August 31, 200519 yr Author Yeah I was worried about that fucking Harddrive, Ill have to buy a second and RAID em' But shit these things are expensive :wow: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144160 18 months? Exellent, and yes this beast is for gaming.

The 7800GTX is the newest and best Video card out there. *orgasm* http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143036 *orgasm*

You'll find that the 7800gtx is the most powerful graphics card out right now, your problem is obviously that you have an old card (or other parts of your PC are out-dated), not the fact that is has 256mb of ram.
August 31, 200519 yr yea it sucks o well im not gonna spend all this money on a game that im just gonna stop playing in a month
August 31, 200519 yr Eh, what's wrong with the fucking hard drive? You dumbfucks do realise it's a 10,000 rpm drive right...and that larger hdd's are slower? So you use that as the main drive so your games n shit load fast and get some secondary storage....and yeah, it doesnt matter if your video card has a gig of GDDR3 ram on it if it's a fucking geforce 2 processor. To the dude who's gonna buy that, I'd wait for what ATI has in store for us. It'll blow nvidia away i'm sure. I'm not bias, I have a 6800 gt in my box now, but ati usually does top nvidia. Also for the money you give for that 4000 cpu i'd grab a 4400 x2 and oc it 200 mhz then it'll = a 1000$ 4800. It's just a better investment. Plus you can say RAWR I have TeH 2 cores! ;D Yeeeeah and even if you do RAID 0 your two raptors yanno it's just a clone right and you do not get anymore than 74 gb of space. It's basically a clone to make it 75% faster. Reading and writing to both HDD's at once.
August 31, 200519 yr Author Yeah AIT is coming out with Cossfire and shit but all this hardware is already in teh mail. Dude the multicore processors are cool but I can OC this 4000+ Sandy to the speed of an FX57 which rapes the dual core CPUs. But it would be cool to say "RAWR I have TeH 2 cores! ;D" :rl:
August 31, 200519 yr Are you trying to make us jealous? lol thats top-of-the-line basically. Asshole.
August 31, 200519 yr Author This is my first build I have no idea how long this thing will last until I have to make an upgrade. You people on the other had do, and I got the answers I was looking for. Not trying to brag at all, im not some 13 year old chink sir. :goatse:
August 31, 200519 yr I wouldn't count on a 400 mhz stable oc for that 4000. Maybe you'll get a really good one tho. I know the new cores venice and such overclock well but....400 mhz is really pushing it. and it's not an fx so the multiplier isn't unlocked. Soooo, if you o/c that cpu 400 mhz everything else in your box is going to be smoking since you o/c via FSB or HTT. I wonder wtf is up with their rating system. 4000+ clocked at 2.4 ghz. My old 3400 is 2.4 ghz. yes half the cache and lacks the new stepping and what not...but still...you'd think they'd put a 4000 @ 2.6 or so. they have like 10 processors rated differently at 2.2 or 2.4 ghz. oh well good luck.

The hard drive is fine unless you are an extreme gamer, or into warez. Same HD I have on this computer and I still have about 55 GB left.
August 31, 200519 yr Yeah I have a couple raptors also. 36 and a 74 gig. BF2 map load time < 10 seconds. ;D

Anyone hear anything else along these lines?

Meh. I dont really understand their rating system either but I have a 300-400$ budget for a CPU so ill get the best I can. The San Diego core is a tad bit better than the Venice core and will OC to 2.6 effortlessly which is the speed of the FX 55. Yeah the 3400 is a 2.4 also but the 4000 costs more so its better :naughty:

Gay, I am an extreme gamer and I d/l shit loads of music (limewire) but meh Ill just get another one and RAID em.

Hate to break it to you, but RAID 0 actually turns several hard drives into one, like spreading a partition over a few hard drives, that makes it much faster(not sure how much faster though). Its RAID 1 that makes a clone of one of the disks or a "mirror". That doesn't really boost performance but if one disk fails and its hot-swappable then you can take out the old one and put a new one in without the system doing anything visible(besides its drive coming out and a new one going back in). I know this because I had to read up on it before I put my two raptors in RAID 0, and trust me, 2 raptors(totalling 146gb) is VERY fast. :D
August 31, 200519 yr okie sorrys, i just remember this fat old guy talking to me at my local pc shop....havent had first hand experience ;]

September 1, 200519 yr Yeah they're definatly nice. They're sopposed to be coming out with SATA 2 which allows more bus? Faster? I know the raptors are nice and i seen a huge difference from my old ide hdd's but i always want something better and i cant wait to see what they pull out of their ass soon. BTW you never said what your current pc has in it?

If you really want to know... ~Intel Celeron ® @ 2.2 Ghz ~256 MB of RAM ~Onboard sound and graphics ~40 GB Maxtor pieceofshit harddrive I get 10-40 FPS in CS 1.6 :puke:
September 1, 200519 yr There's definatly room for improvment. Celeron is about the worst pos i've ever seen. Ppl are like omfg 2.2 ghz. Then they get to using it and it's like omfg it took 20 minutes to open photoshop. If i were you i'd take it and overclock it to about 80 ghz and set the fucking thing on fire. Er, use the 40 gig hdd for storage tho ;D I went from a 700 mhz athlon with a gf2 gts to a a64 3400 + 6800 gt _ gig of ddr 3200 and i peed just a little because it was total rawr...
