you guys are hackers so you must have linux running your computers.

what kind of distro's do you all run?

For servers I run Redhat Enterprise 3/4 or Cent OS 3/4 (CENT is just Redhat Enterprise stripped of the logos). Use to be big on BSD (Free or Open), but found that OSes like Redhat Enterprise and Cent OS are just built so much better and save a lot of time.

Don't really use Linux for desktop shit really, do to my gaming needs.

yeah, also forgot to mention CentOS 3 for my PBX, and ClarkConnect for my server/router (I think its redhat)

Wait - you're a linux user and you prefer visual basic over c++ ?

OpenBSD on my firewall, and I used to run Slackware and Debian on the desktop.

I prefer it for windows apps as well, just for simplicity; gets the task done faster (overall I mean, of course its going to be slower at runtime, but computers nowadays are fast enough that it doesnt really matter)

I also like redhat, but dont use it at the moment

What greeneyes said. Its not that I dont like C++, its that Im intimidated by it, I cant understand it for shit. I could probably look at C++ code and maby figure out what it does, but write it...... thats like me getting an A+ with honors in P.E. Its just impossible. I use Linux for things that dont need to have a lot of resources, such as a server, I dont care about the windows crap, I just want a server, so Ill use linux. Im a LONG way from ever thinking that ill begin to develop C++ Linux applications, when I cant make C++ Windows applications. But as far as Windows or Linux, Linux owns Windows no questions asked I know this... but for gaming.... I have to go with Windows otherwise I would have a Linux PC.

Gentoo, because of the ridiculous optimization you can (via configuring what extra stuff you need supported) achieve, especially on slower boxen.

For example, I threw together a 500mhz, 160 meg ram, 80 gig box from spare parts around my house because I wanted to test linux on it. It sits in the corner of my room behind my desk with nought but a cat6 and power cable running to it.

It's been running Gentoo for a few months, and acts as a web server (apache+php5+perl), ftp server (proftpd), database server (MySQL and PostgreSQL), IRC server + network services (ircu + SRVX), and I've been messing around with sendmail and other mail-related stuff (spamassassin, AV filtering, etc.). Sometimes I run gameservers for various stuff (Kaillera for MAME multiplayer, HLDS for half-life based games, etc.). I use SSH to administer it remotely, with PuTTY as my perffered SSH client.

Only disadvantage is that you compile EVERYTHING from source, although there are binaries available for most of the larger components now (firefox, openoffice, kde/gnome, etc.). Very stable and very fast once everything's installed though.

For servers, I have two Gentoo boxes, and one Slackware box.

But in all reality, Portage has gotten significantly slower in the three or so years I've been using Gentoo. With some hacking, you can make it use MySQL to speed things up a bit though, which is kinda nice (if you already have MySQL installed on a box like a server or are willing to install it).

Why would you assume that "hackers" use Linux? Probably see more "hackers" using FreeBSD desktops, which is just kewl.

what the fuck ? also gentoo is for ricers. you dont actually see any difference in performance, but portage is a nice invention. debian ...

Haha I used to FreeBSD-STABLE and NetBSD-CURRENT on the desktop, you get a feeling of power if you spend the time setting them up for work and play.

Anyway Im setting up Gentoo atm (using a customized live cd). I agree, Gentoo's actual system does lick balls. It's riddled with bugs and other shit, but the fact you can build it from source gives it the upper hand over most Linux distros. Slackware is also pretty good, ran that for a while, problem is most of the community whines and bitches when you dont build your own packages (which is a pain), and they are a bunch of zealots (like debian, that's why It ended up getting mke2fs -j). IMO BSD is alot better than Linux, but Linux has alot more hardware support and it's got more application support, you may think Linux sucks (I think it's actually better than windows nowwith hardware but if you run FreeBSD on the desktop for 2 months you think otherwise.

I wouldn't say Gentoo is riddled with bugs... You'll probably end up with problems if you aren't careful when updating config files using etc-update (or the prefered dispatch-conf), and you end up removing your fstab or apache configs because you never read the manual, fuck up your system by removing deps on accident (by not following good portage practices), being dumb about faking package installs, improper maintance, and with anything, there are always going to be package bugs and compatibility issues, but since Gentoo is a source based distro (like LFS, and SM), you're more likely to run into issues when compiling if you have outdated libraries, etc that don't get along and nearly all the "bugs" in packages can be worked around. Probably boils down to people picking a distro based on vanity and wether or not people say its cool, and then get discouraged when they fuck shit up then they bash it because they couldn't get it to work. :P

Sure, alot of people use it because they want to be a "ricer" on their 3GHz P4 (when in reality at that speed you won't notice any differance from packaged binary or if you compile from source, other than it having default support support for various things, which might increase its dep. list). As far as I know, on distros like debian and slackware you can't install packages with or without support for certain things as easy without directly configuring and compiling the package from source (does the apt system have something like: apt-get source xmms --minus-mad to install xmms without MAD support?, that'd be pretty neat and would make the apt system a bit more versatile, dont you think?).

Sorry to sound like a "Gentoo whore" and all, but with time comes knowledge. ;)

my 2 cents

Gentoo & FreeBSD

t3rm1ght u dont use linux. die please.

AMEN.

I want to use linux but im unsure which distro to start with.

Id prefer not to compile anything, at least to start off with id like a prebuilt distro that is fairly friendly to newbies, that is, easy to get the hang of migrating from windows.

Any recommendations?
