i have a kt3 ultra2 MSI motherboard and it currently has 256mb 333 stick in it

i have a 256 and 512 at 266.

when i put them in my computer will lock up. i tried changing the timings in the bios but i dont think im looking in the right place. i can run it with the 512 alone for a while but it eventually locks up also.

what do i have to do in order to install them.

my mobo allows 3gb of ram using pc2700/ddr333(currently have) pc2100/ddr266(trying to put in) pc1600/ddr200

i dunno whats wrong

well first off learn how to use a super nintendo, installing ram shouldnt be much harder then that.

maybe you bought a crappy brand or cracked something? who knows.

He is helping you if you can use a super nintendo you can install ram

the different ram speeds I imagine would make things not work how they are supposed to. Try getting the 512 stick in a pc2700 variety.

apples with apples, not with oranges.

One of the first rules of hardware: Never, EVER, mix RAM types

Dumbass.

Usually the effects of mixing RAM will vary from board to board but in general its not a good idea to try. The computer wants the RAM at the slowest settings of the slowest part for timings, speed, etc.

whats the FSB speed for the cpu you are using, if it is 333 then its probably because you are trying to push that pc2100 (266) ram too fast. Sounds like the problem to me. As one guy stated, get yourself some pc2700 (333) and it should work. Or you could be a good little overclocker (underclocker possibly) and raise the multiplyer and drop the bus speed until it runs stable. (you'll take a performance hit tho)

What error does it give you?

I will give you step by step instructions.

1: Put on wool socks.

2: Walk around rubbing feet on carpet.

3: Touch all the parts of your computer (the RAM too!).

4: FUCKING GOOGLE IT!

You are such a failed troll :sly:

Anyway, i'd reccomend taking it back to your local hardware store and asking a professional

get a new motherboard, dont use old pc2700 ram, dont touch the gold pins on the bottom of the ram with your fat greasy fingers, dont stick your screwdriver into the plug while holding the metal and dont say "can anyone help me that doesn't try to look cool on a forum" when it was actually a helpful tip.
There is no problem with mixing ram speeds, except for the fact that all your ram will only be as fast as the slowest module. I'm rumnning 2 sticks of 333 and 2 266 and there are no problems. If you have 4 ram slots, you have to make sure you put alternate sizes in the correct slot. The arrangement is usually 1324, so have the 256 on slot 1 and the 512 on 3. Or sure why not.
