I am trying to fix a friend's computer because whenever he tries to boot it gives an error: "Windows\System32\Config\System is missing or corrupted" or something like that. Anyway, I have been looking up help on google for a half an hour and I have found out that a registry hive is corrupted. His computer does not have Windows restore utility or w/e it is called so I have no way of repairing the file. Can you give me some advice on what to do?

Format the harddrive, install linux

if your friend is a windows only kinda guy, then just format the harddrive and install windows again...

see if you can repair the file by running the boot disk for the os and repairing it through dos. might work. i know it does work for the boot.ini file because i tryed it.

Sadly, my friend never backs up his files so formatting is not an option.

Hmm...how would I go about making a boot disk? I have tryed some programs but they only let me start in DOS mode which does not really fix anything.

that IS a boot disk.....

you do know that Windows is just a graphical user interface for DOS right?

just take his files using a linux bootable CD, put them on another computer, then reformat and re-install. Copy the files back over, whala... next time, your "friend" should be so retarted and let teh sp()rk own his pc.

1. Try booting using "last known good configuration"

2. Follow this http://www.jsifaq.com/subJ/tip4700/rh4796.htm
