oh and for your overclocking problem here is the answer

http://members.rogers.com/shibbeh/you_are_gay.jpg

just a wild guess, but going to 2.4 from 1.8 is a 30% overclock...this tends to burn out traces and fliflops within the proc, if you're not running WC or otherwise protecting the proc more havily than simple increased airflow can do. At least with P4 & Athlon procs...once you revert, it doesn't help, because the damage has been done...so your I/O errors *could* be because you fuxed your chip, and it can't use needed internal traces...

If I'm right, and this is the cause, all I can say is "you're fucked"

If I'm wrong, and this isn't the issue, then it's a software problem, in which case, at absolute worst, you just use the install disk to repair windows (or reinstall right over the old one), and don't even lose any data, then reinstall HL once more, and see if that corrects the issue. (Tjis is the "quick and easy fixall solution", so you don't have to ID the software problem to correct it, of course)

I'm betting on the damaged chip, though, since most overclocking "pros" and forums run by overclockers will usually tell you that without massive cooling, a 10%-15% overclock is the highest "safe" ratio for "absolute" speed on an OC'd proc (combined frequency and multiplier).
