Dutch authorities arrested three individuals last week accused of running one of the largest ever hacker botnets comprising over 100,000 zombie PCs. The three men, aged 19, 22 and 27, were not named. Police confiscated computers, cash and a sports car during searches of the suspects' homes. A botnet is a collection of hacked computers at the disposal of a hacker without the owner's knowledge. Botnets are commonly used to launch distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks or to send spam. With over 100,000 infected systems, the network is one of the largest ever detected, prosecutors claimed. The suspects will be charged with computer hacking, destructing automated networks, and installing adware and spyware. The trio used the W32.toxbot internet worm to recruit systems for their botnet army. The worm was first detected early this year and infected systems all over the world. Antivirus software to detect and remove the software is available, but the suspects kept changing their malware to avoid detection. The authorities are also investigating the group's involvement in a blackmail attempt on an unnamed enterprise in the US. It is common practice among online crime gangs to extort the owners of websites, forcing them to pay to prevent a DDoS attack on their networks. It is also suspected that the group was involved in crafting internet worms with keystroke logging software to gather login names to commit credit card fraud and identity theft.

October 11, 200519 yr Clever bastards, shame they got greedy and got caught. They always get caught when they get greedy. Two kids in NZ were scamming from their homestay families (families they lived with while overseas, legal guardians during their stay here). they used keyloggers to get passwords, then transfered $ from their accounts into personal accounts. The first took $10,000 immediately. In seconds the bank had called the account holder, and the kid got caught still sitting on the PC trying to shut it down. The second was siphoning off a few dollars here and there over the hours the parents were out shopping. He only got caught when he bragged to mates and they pressured him to buy cigarettes. He got caught by a neighbour of the parents, they told the parents, the parents knew he had no money, and they had been arguing over who was spending their savings and blaming each other for weeks. It was obvious then what had been happening, as the kid always had new things he couldn't afford. He got sent home and the homestay kept the remainding 3 months of his 6 months accomodation at $180 a week as compensation for several hundred he'd taken. I expect his parents will have strapped his ass, having paid so much to send him for an international education then to have him fuck it up like that.
