When you set the gravity to a huge number (9 x 10^50)+:

A client and possibly server crash happens when someone throws a grenade. This is odd because when someone jumps or drops a gun, there is no crash. I'm not a buffer-overflow guru, but could this be an off-by-one? (Something with comparing the string length with an acceptible length?) Or other mistake?

I didn't test this on the dedicated server because I get memory cannot be read when I have both the server and client(game) up.

If anyone tests this and finds anything interesting post it here!

Wouldn't it be nice if we could do sv_gravity 9 x 10^50 + x55\x8B\xEC\x68\x18\x10\ etc... and get a remote cmdshell on some cs:s players?

actually i think hes trying to point out a good raging technique

also, if you set the gravity to 0 i've noticed that throwing a gun or other will crash the server

apperently i was examinating this phenomenon a while back.

i played with sv_gravity 0 for a long time, activated on my

client side. some servers crashed. it wasnt every server though that crashed, but those who suffered from that uhm issue, crashed after a few rounds, some times earlier. maybe when someone threw a nade, i didnt watch this.another thing was that afaik none of the servers really went down for good. they all were up again after a few mins, or were up immedietly but with next map. well i never came up with an exploitable conclusion.

Ahh! If we talk about this here valve will find out about it and patch it within minutes.

EDIT: But seriously setting the gravity to an exponentially high or low number should overload the server... maybe.

to fix the problem:

1. gently pour some water over your Halflife2 dvd

( this will get any bad karma away )

2. uninstall the game

3. Insert your slightly wet Halflife2 dvd into your dvd-rom drive

4. Now you can just install again and this should fix your problem.

In SoF2, if you type /ignore and a string longer than 10 digits, the server crashes and comes right back up with the default map...

/ignore 12345678901

so it could work.
