December 30, 200321 yr http://www.dalermehndi.com/images/DMHomepage_07.jpg Dear Friends, I am attaching herewith a Petition to the President of India and leading members of the Indian Government for the protection of India?s leading pop songwriter/performer, Daler Mehndi. The cause for this Petition is, briefly, the following: The police of the State of Punjab have arrested Daler?s estranged elder brother, Shamsher Singh, for running a visa racket whereby he promised, against payment of 30,000 USD, a visa and a place in Daler?s band to people who wanted to illegally migrate to the West. Since he couldn?t fulfil his promise, those who were cheated lodged a complaint. Daler has categorically denied any involvement. It is public knowledge that Daler had severed ties with his elder brother 3 years ago. Daler went to the extend of publishing two Public Notices to that effect in several newspapers. On October 2, a few days after the arrest of Shamsher, Daler received a telephone call threatening him to pay 15 million Rupees (320,000 USD) or else they will ruin his career. He refused and made the call public next day. Since then, the Punjab Police are trying their best to get him arrested on the pretext that they ?need to interrogate him in custody because he has evaded questions when he was interrogated.? Daler had made himself available twice for interrogation in Patiala (Punjab) and was interrogated each time for several hours. When he reached Patiala the second time, his car was attacked and splashed with plaster of Paris right in front of the police force which did not intervene. Inside the police station, he was made to remove his pants in front of all present and sing songs for them. The police bragged to the press that they ?would make him sing and dance for the inmates of Patiala jail.? The police have been able to obtain from the local court a non-bailable warrant against him. Daler appealed but the court turned it down. All his friends fear that once in their custody, the Punjab Police will be able to make him confess to anything because custody means police brutality. It also means that his bank accounts will be frozen, ostensibly to facilitate the investigation but in reality so that he cannot pay a lawyer. The ultimate objective being to break his career. Therefore, we ask you to sign the Petition requesting the Government of India to transfer the case out of Punjab to an independent investigative agency like the Central Bureau of Intelligence (equivalent to FBI). For this, all you need to do is to return this mail stating that you agree that your name - and/or that of your organization ? be added to the Petition which will be sent to the concerned authorities on Wednesday.
