Small updates rarely make it in time, the latest being the release of de_nuke Also, even after a year's delay, hl2 was released half finished: there were bugs everywhere, from skipping sound, to people spending $70 on it only to find it crashed whenever they attempted to run it. Gabe, as head of Valve, represents Valve pretty well: fat lazy douche bags who coulnd't program if their lives depended on it. Half Life 1 was a fluke, whether or not the praise they got reflects their actual effort is another question. Any small games development company can create a game with equal or even more superior graphics, simply because technology allows it. Fuck Valve and fuck their undeserved success.

If you actualy had Steam , you'd see an option to play off line. No pictures though so that's probably why you're confused. Get mom or dad to show you what offline looks like so you can recognise it when it comes up. As for BF2 - well..try a no-cd crack.
