January 13, 200421 yr cat5 is ethernet standard...8 wires (4 pairs), and an RJ-45 connector...works just fine for most "short distance" networks...category 6 is basically for high "noise" areas and longer distance stretches....so unless you live under high voltage power lines or an extremely strong radio tower, save your money, and go cat 5 or cat 5e
