I had this problem before, what happened to me was, the cable line to my modem was getting such a low signal, that the attenuation was too much and it couldnt throw enough power down the line to keep a connection. What my ISP did, was they came out, and used an un-balanced splitter to give my line 75% of the incoming signal strangth from the pole, fixed it right up. So if you have a lot of splitters from where your cable is distributed on the side of your house all the way to your modem, you are getting poor signal, thus loosing speed, and in your case, connection.

Lol...You don't even need that, 99% of home owned networks have no encryption enabled, and most network cards immediately pick up on a signal..I used to leech off of my neighboor when my router died.
