Posted January 8, 200619 yr http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=alisher71&items=25&page=1&frompage=-1&iid=-1&de=off By JOHN HENDERSON, [email protected] December 31, 2005 As many as 700 people may be victims of an eBay scam believed to have been perpetrated by an East Naples couple who are still wanted for questioning. In other developments in the case, Collier County sheriff's investigators are urging victims to turn over checks and pursue subpoenas that will order financial institutions to turn over records regarding the transactions. So far, 480 people have filed victim reports with the Collier County Sheriff's Office, contending they shelled out money on the online auction site for electronic equipment such as cameras and iPods, but never received the items. But eBay's investigation shows the list of victims throughout the United States and Canada likely will swell to 700, sheriff's spokeswoman Stephanie Spell said Friday. Spell said most of the victims live outside of Collier County. Wanted for questioning are Alisher Mardonov, 34, and his girlfriend, Shahnova Khakimova, 31. They resided at 1765 Courtyard Way, No. 205, where the customers sent payment for the items. The would-be buyers were told to make the check out to either Mardonov or Khakimova. The victims bought the items in auctions run by an eBay user with the screen name Alisher71. Spell said the would-be transactions ranged in price from $100 to $300. A mailing is being sent out from Sheriff's Office investigators to the 480 victims on record, urging them to submit transaction documentation. "The real strong message is: Please get in (to the Sheriff's Office) the front and back copy of cashed checks and money orders so we can compile a strong case with a severity level that matches the level of crime," she said. The couple initially had a reliable track record of sending out products they sold on the site. "They did have a long history of successful sales on eBay. But that behavior changed in mid- November, according to feedback," Spell said. According to a press release posted on the Sheriff's Office Web site, investigators have had the full cooperation of eBay's investigation team, and eBay officials have turned over records and documents. The East Naples residents earlier this month cleared out personal belongings from their condominium and phoned their employers to say they had returned to their home country in Central Asia. One of them also told their landlord that they needed money because they were trying to bring their two children to the United States from their native Uzbekistan, but permission was denied by federal officials. Investigators have learned the couple may have come from Uzbekistan, a landlocked country near Afghanistan. The U.S. Secret Service also is involved because of interstate implications of the reported thefts. "There is no record of them leaving" this country, Spell said, adding that a be-on-the-lookout bulletin has been issued to law enforcement agencies nationwide.
