I got my digicam which can record some small videos in avi format. Problem is that the avi files come out to be pretty big. Up to 20mb for like 30 secs of jumpy video. I know, sux.

Anyways, I would like to know how to convert the files into another format like Divx or whatever is good to make the file smaller and yet not lose much of its quality. What programs out there can do this?

No i was wrong its not like about 30mb but more like 10mb or so. And they come out as avi files. I have one as a small file that is 5.82mb

160x120 resolution and gets 15 framerate with a play lenght of 63.2 seconds.

Thats pretty horrible seeings as I have downloaded pr0n with 512x384 resolution. That's like three times the resolution size. A framerate of 30. Thats double the framerates and its only 40 seconds long. Not to mention it has better sound rate samples and its only 4.26mb. Of course its divx compressed.

So i assume if I convert my digicam's video samples I should easily be able to make it under 1mb. Right?

I've been trying the virtualdub thing but I'm a noob to it and only seem to reduce the file size by almost nothing and I end up seeing a big reduction in the overall quality. Sux0r!!11

Anyone got any pointers?

encode then with divx or xvid. With v-dub I think you are still using the same codec.

Edit:

In v-dub open the movie then. Make sure you have the codecs you want to use for both audio(AC3 or MP3) and video(Divx).

Select under Video->Fast recompress (Do not use full processing)

Select also under Audio->Full processing (If you are only going to reconvert the video choose Audio->Direct Stream Copy and use Virtualdub MP3 Freeze).

Select Video->Compression

Select Audio->Compression

(Optional Select Video->Filters

And last hit File->Save AVI.

Done.
