Posted February 26, 200619 yr I was wondering last night... how do CDs know what cd-key is correct and incorrect if they do not connect to a server and check? Wouldn't the cd-keys have to be stored on the disc some how? Could it be decompiled to find them? If not, how else could it be explained? Thanks.
February 26, 200619 yr MS Office usually has a cd-key stored on them so after you buy the product you don't have to enter it since it is alread there. you can get it by jsut looking to see where you ahve to enter the product key. im guessing that MS either programs them on when they press the disc or that after you enter the cd key once it automatically stores it in like the apps history.

Thanks. generally they are in a format such that most of the characters corespond to the rest of the characters in terms of some mathematical function, the setup programs on cd's just apply the same maths and see if the check characters that are generated are the same as those supplied (in the key)

February 27, 200619 yr As far as I know, to make a keygen all you have to do is reassemble the exe and take a look at it's checking function. Granted, you have to know ASM, and have to wade through without comments/macros, but I think that's how it's done.
