Posted March 7, 200619 yr Hi, I just bought a CS:S account (includes DOD:S too :O) for 500k gold in a game called 'RuneScape'. However, I always had problems when playing games that use DirectX. Usually, I solved this by adding -opengl in a shortcut. This would make the game run in OpenGL mode, which means = no problem. This does not work for CS:S, it still runs in D3D mode. The problems I get when running a Direct X game: - White/Black flashes of whole screen while playing. - After a while the flashes get more often and worse. - Then the game crashes, showing me the empty map back ground and causing sound loop, whereafter I am forced to reboot my computer. - The flashing starts when I play, instantly. Takes about 15 mins before it crashes. The -opengl command works for games such as Warcraft 3, Call of Duty, just not for CS:S or DOD:S or another HL2 engine game. I have a "Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with AGPX8 graphics" card. Windows XP. My other specs do not involve this problem, so I won't bother posting them. YES, I know that my specs are bad to play CS:S, I can play it with about 40-50 fps on Direct X 7 mode. I just want to rage. Thanks in advance. PS: No retarded replies please. :( I need serious help.
March 7, 200619 yr Wait, you get 40-50FPS, yet you say it flashes black and white all the time? It's probably a driver problem, or your card is royally fucked, because the closest problem to that I know of is white squares all over the screen. Plus Source is a DirectX only engine, it doesn't support OpenGL. I suggest buying a new card to be honest, a 4200Ti isn't really going to cut it now that Unreal Engine 3 and Cryengine 2 are on the horizon. I suggest buying an nVidia 6600/6800GT or an Ati X800GT if you're on a budget, but if you can afford to spend a hundred or so more, I suggest buying an nVidia 7800GT. What settings are you using?
March 7, 200619 yr Author I don't really get what you mean by settings, you mean my video settings in Source? Basically everything that will lower your fps turned off, 800x600 resolution. Anti Aliasing and stuff is off. I will get a new video card soon, problem is, I'm on a low budget. You think a "Nvidia AGP Geforce Fx5200 128Mb" can pull it off? If not, I might get a "Nvidia PCIExpress Geforce 7300 GS 256 Mb".. Max I can spend is 100 Euros.. Oh, and is there any difference between 128Mb, 256 Mb? And Tv-Out or something? I'm really not good at this, and I'm afraid I might buy a card which I can't plug into my PC.. :\
March 7, 200619 yr Well spend that little extra on getting a 6600GT, They're a smidgen over 100 Euros. A 256mb is the best one to get, here in the UK they go for around £110-130.
March 7, 200619 yr Author Ok thanks for help :) I'll save up some more to get the 6600 GT then ;) Shame there's no fix :( it started acting like this with D3D games since I reformated pc, always used to work fine, tried reformat again and again and didn't help :<
March 7, 200619 yr i got a nvidia geforce mx4000 128mb pci [horrible] with 256 ram and i can barley play css, i downloaded a config for best fps.. i think u should reinstalll drivers or maybe buy new card.. my friend downloaded a driver and he had shit flashin like crazy and all the textures where fucked... sounds like ur problem post back with what happens
March 7, 200619 yr Author Yeah your right, it has something to do with the drivers. However, without the current drivers I am not able to play CS:S at ALL. It starts cs with the window saying starting.. That window closes, and nothing happens. :P
