Assume x =1

so x2=1 because 1*1 =1

so x2=x

so x2-1 = x-1

so (x+1)( x-1)=(x-1) because I factorized the left side and just bracketed the right

so (x+1)=1 because I divided both sides by (x-1)

so (1+1)=1

so 2=1

(this thing can't cope with superscripts so you'll have to assume x2 is x*x) I know its pretty preschool but I still found it quite confusing until I figured it out)

(sorry wrong forum)

wut

edit: wut

edit: Okay, i'm not that stupid, but these sorts of problems in g0t flames section? WUT? :ugh:

lemme make it clearer.

Assume x =1

so x^2=1 because 1*1 =1

so x^2=x

so x^2-1 = x-1

so (x+1)( x-1)=(x-1) because I factorized the left side and just bracketed the right

so (x+1)=1 because I divided both sides by (x-1)

so (1+1)=1

so 2=1

Assume x =1

so x2=1 because 1*1 =1

X=1

X2 = X TIMES 2 = 1 = BULLSHIT

Btw figure this one out:

Assume x = stfu

assume x2 = you

assume x3 = happy

assume X4 = bai

If X2 would X then we'd all be X3, gg thx X4.

??

Assume x =1

so x2=1 because 1*1 =1

X=1

X2 = X TIMES 2 = 1 = BULLSHIT

Lets assume you didn't take any sort of math class after 5th grade so you wouldn't get what he is talking about.

He explained that he couldn't use subscripts so x2 is x times x you fucking idiot not 2x Congratulations on winning the retard trophy

Thanks but 9 posts isn't enough to award me plox.

x2's ratio to the sun is slighter similar to x+1 so it ='s pizza

Heres a rough proof of why it's wrong

x=1

x^2=x 1*1=1 still fair

(x^2)-1=x-1 (1*1)-1=1 still fair

(x-1)(x+1)=(x-1) (1+1)(1-1)=(1-1) or 2(0)=0

(x+1)=1 uh oh you just divided by 0. This is where the problem goes wrong

2=1 and this is the result of the bad math.

I have plenty enough posts to award you, except those accounts are banned so I can't use them so you'll just have to make do with this one.

seeing nones of you are getting this...

basix the reason its weird is because I divided by (x-1) which is (1-1) which is 0 :o

Look two posts up ;)

ah. Nicen sorry. I didn't see :S

heres why you're proof is wrong

x = 1 (ok)

x ^ 2 = 1 (ok)

x ^ 2 = x (ok)

x ^ 2 - 1 = x - 1 (ok)

(x + 1)(x - 1) = x - 1 (ok)

(x + 1)(x - 1) / (x - 1) = x - 1 (WRONG. x - 1 = 0, since x = 1)

so (x+1) * 0 / 0 = x - 1

0 / 0 = x - 1

note that 0 / 0 is indeterminate. Therefore proof is invalid.

heres why you're proof is wrong

x = 1 (ok)

x ^ 2 = 1 (ok)

x ^ 2 = x (ok)

x ^ 2 - 1 = x - 1 (ok)

(x + 1)(x - 1) = x - 1 (ok)

(x + 1)(x - 1) / (x - 1) = x - 1 (WRONG. x - 1 = 0, since x = 1)

so (x+1) * 0 / 0 = x - 1

0 / 0 = x - 1

note that 0 / 0 is indeterminate. Therefore proof is invalid.

correct...

heres why you're proof is wrong

x = 1 (ok)

x ^ 2 = 1 (ok)

x ^ 2 = x (ok)

x ^ 2 - 1 = x - 1 (ok)

(x + 1)(x - 1) = x - 1 (ok)

(x + 1)(x - 1) / (x - 1) = x - 1 (WRONG. x - 1 = 0, since x = 1)

so (x+1) * 0 / 0 = x - 1

0 / 0 = x - 1

note that 0 / 0 is indeterminate. Therefore proof is invalid.

Correct, if this was a limit problem with x^2 - 1=x-1, with lim x ->1, we could remove the discontinuity, but very good explanation regardless.
