Correct, if this was a limit problem with x^2 - 1=x-1, with lim x ->1, we could remove the discontinuity, but very good explanation regardless.

even if there is a limit of lim(x - 1), it wouldn't work because lim(x -> 1) x ^ 2 does not EQUAL to 1. so the first 2nd statement

x ^ 2 = x

is not ok, and therefore x ^ 2 - 1 = x - 1 would not have even been right, thus making the proof invalid even if limits were involved.

It comes to 9000 zillion trillion gillion!1!1

I think. :wow:

he is right, that is with the unknown sence of factors going around, that formula states that all numbers are numbers

but in real terms, it is not correct

Assume x =1

so x2=1 because 1*1 =1

so x2=x

so x2-1 = x-1

so (x+1)( x-1)=(x-1) because I factorized the left side and just bracketed the right

so (x+1)=1 because I divided both sides by (x-1)

so (1+1)=1

so 2=1

(this thing can't cope with superscripts so you'll have to assume x2 is x*x) I know its pretty preschool but I still found it quite confusing until I figured it out)

(sorry wrong forum)

I got this.

Assume u=don't know what a "^" key is

kthxbai.

Assume x =1

so x2=1 because 1*1 =1

so x2=x

so x2-1 = x-1

so (x+1)( x-1)=(x-1) because I factorized the left side and just bracketed the right

so (x+1)=1 because I divided both sides by (x-1)

so (1+1)=1

so 2=1

I have never seen this really new problem before.

fuck algebra thats all i have to say. i hate it because i havent taken it since 9th grade and can only do algebra you can figure out in your head like

x+1 = 5

x=4.. OWNED

l

so (x+1)( x-1)=(x-1) because I factorized the left side and just bracketed the right

wrong... (x+1)(x-1) = x^2-1 .. you gotta FOIL it out..

GhOsT']x = 0

\o/

Lawl, you can use 0 for any question like that.
