There are no major nation states left that could maintain a sustained war a la WWI or WWII any more. Every European state lacks the trained cadre of military personel to field a major army. Any every small nation is so outclassed by even 20 year old US/NATO equipment that spending billions on "next generation" systems makes no economic or military sense. Russia lacks economic power to play, and China lacks the geographic location to every conventionally threaten the US or Europe.

 

Example, the US Abrams tank is 2-3x better than any other tank it will meet except perhaps the British Challenger tanks. The US could build a tank for a fraction of the cost that would still outclass anything it will face.

 

The sheer military and technological superiority of even decades old weaponry is why most of the world has shifted to guerrilla or terrorist political tactics.

america is currently the best country in the way that almost every aspect of the nation is near level with if not above almost all competitors; its military is superior, its economy is high (despite it's drop), production is good, resources are plentiful. that really doesn't show everything though.

its politicians are too busy fighting over it to fight for it, too busy doing what will give them an ego-boost to keep the country on top.

its self-centered capitolism is too busy funding useless gadgets for profit to use that money for funding scientific research; narrow-minded morality issues are further preventing a number of potential discoveries.

its citizens are too focused on worrying about penis-size and their brand new car to bother with reforming the outrageously inefficient education system and pushing their government back into it's place. people have their priorities seriously fucked up, and America is equally fucked if it doesn't fix itself. whether or not it's powerful now isn't going to mean much if it doesn't get back on track and bother working for the future of something other than an individual's pocket and some political party's supremacy.

i'd say america is currently the most powerful (single)nation in the world, but it's as likely to stay that way as i am likely to become president unless it seriously changes its course.

During WW1 we were producing enough for both sides of the war and still had enough left over to come in and beat the fuck out of Germany.

 

During WW2 we were producing enough for England and the resistance in France with enough left over to stage a three theatre war across the globe.

 

We just plain outproduce every other country on the face of the planet. The fact that we can increase efficiency by producing better shit doesn't make it any less true.

 

Bullet for bullet, rocket for rocket, missile for missile, ship for ship, aircraft for aircraft, the USA will always come out ahead. We don't have the numbers other countries do, but we sure as shit have better production capabilities.

The rise and fall of nations is expected and so it comes as no surprise that Europe's emulation of the United States has happened. It is a precursor to what will eventually have to happen to the world.

 

France is hoping to play their cards right so they can maintain power in this new global government structure, but they are rapidly finding that the economies of the world operate on English and it is much easier to continue using a known language than learning a new one. French will become nothing more than a language spoken at home in the next 200 years.
