Untill you overwrite your drive with new data... the old data is STILL there. Griff0n, if this is wrong please correct me... however I think it's correct.

Griff0n, if this is wrong please correct me... however I think it's correct. Your logic is simple, and would seem to be correct. However, this is still not an effective method of absolute deletion of data. It is quite complicated, but basically due to the scarring of the HDD, data written over can still be recovered even if the same data sector has been rewriten over several times. The FBI suggests on a document, which is available to the public (I assume, seeing as I have read it), that the only way to completely (100%) delete the data off a HDD is the actual destruction of the plastic rings. The mose effective, and efficient method I can think of doing this, would be to melt the plastic rims into a blob of plastic, therefore making any attempt to recover the data, impossible.
