Posted April 22, 200619 yr http://www.intel.com/products/processor/coreduo/ What do you guys think? I'm getting a new system within a month or two and I'm not sure what processor to go with... I'm open to either AMD or Intel, I just want to make sure I'm getting the best possible one that's out when I do my build.
April 22, 200619 yr not worth it compared to an amd x2 even if youre looking for power and cooling needs. the core duo is clocked lower than the other pentium d's because it was made mostly for laptops (centrino duo) but also because intel has been having trouble keeping thier power and cooling wattages down (Pentium EE 955 80 C at full load!!!) if you go with the x2 then you will not only get a faster proc similar to intel's conroe coming out in the summer since conroe will have 4 clock pipelines in which to execute bits of data rather than 3 and the higher clock speed, but the x2 also does not give out that much more power then the core duo and doens't need that much cooling as you would think sicne I own a 4200+ and i really only have the cooling of 3 case fans, the power supply fans, and the heatsink. the cooling the x2 exerts also can be seen as minimal compared to intel becuase of its archiutecture on the 90 nm compared to intel's 65 nm arch in which it needs because of intel's higher clock speed. in turn, i overall like amd also not only for the clock speed but also for its hypertransport support that is clocked at 1ghz compared to intel's core duo of 667 mhz. lastly, if youre looking for a better deal then i would go with the amd because youre getting a better proc for your buck but if yorue still an intel buff then i would wait for conroe to come out later on in the summer before you build your new system because the core duo is still on the old netburst architecture.

Wait till the Conroe somes out 4mb cache, dual core and blows AMD's FX series. 3.1 ghz Conroe got 16 second pi. where a 3.8 FX-57 got 19.
April 23, 200619 yr u could just wait about a year and get the 4.0 ghz intel is promissing to put out next year
April 23, 200619 yr Author u could just wait about a year and get the 4.0 ghz intel is promissing to put out next year see thats the thing, I'm going to build the system before august, as I'm going off to school then. So it has to be something thats allready out, or is coming out within that time. Spank thanks for the reply, I'm looking over the AMD options.

April 27, 200619 yr the core duo is clocked lower than the other pentium d's because it was made mostly for laptops (centrino duo) but also because intel has been having trouble keeping thier power and cooling wattages down (Pentium EE 955 80 C at full load!!!) This is just wrong. The Core Duo and Pentium M line is based off a completely different architecture than netburst, so the reason for a lower clockspeed does not mean lower performance. In this case, like the Athlon family compared to Netburst, a lower clockspeed works out because of the higher IPC. if you go with the x2 then you will not only get a faster proc similar to intel's conroe coming out in the summer since conroe will have 4 clock pipelines in which to execute bits of data rather than 3 and the higher clock speed First off, Conroe has been soundly beating AMD's x2 and socket AM2 offerings. AMD won't deny it, so this is silly. Talking about "clock pipelines" is ridiculous in this situation. It has no baring on overall performance, period. but the x2 also does not give out that much more power then the core duo and doens't need that much cooling as you would think sicne I own a 4200+ and i really only have the cooling of 3 case fans, the power supply fans, and the heatsink. the cooling The x2's TDP is more than double the highest TDP for Core Duo. The x2 is not designed for a laptop, that's just reality. the x2 exerts also can be seen as minimal compared to intel becuase of its archiutecture on the 90 nm compared to intel's 65 nm arch in which it needs because of intel's higher clock speed. What are you talking about? Intel needs 65nm because of clock speed? That is absolutely ridiculous. Intel was able to do a die shrink before AMD because they always do, that's just how it works. 65nm has nothing to do with the architecture, nor does process size at all. in turn, i overall like amd also not only for the clock speed but also for its hypertransport support that is clocked at 1ghz compared to intel's core duo of 667 mhz. So you like a serial bus more than a parallel bus, good job. In this case, it means absolutely nothing. lastly, if youre looking for a better deal then i would go with the amd because youre getting a better proc for your buck but if yorue still an intel buff then i would wait for conroe to come out later on in the summer before you build your new system because the core duo is still on the old netburst architecture. Merom, which is the mobile Core chip, will probably not make it in the summer. If it does, then go for the Merom chip, otherwise this is a silly debate. If you want an actual laptop, take the Core Duo. If you want a desktop, either get the Conroe or get the x2. Edit: messed up quote tag
