You have to take into consideration that we, the life on earth very well may just be an experiment conducted by ourselves. Personaly, I think that Earth will be destroyed long before humans go extinct, and I don't think it will be in our lifetime. Now, there is a good chance of Nuclear war that ends up destroying a lot of inhabitable places, posibly that is what the Mayans were refering too, but still, the power of suggestion clouds everyone's vision.
