NYTimes.com are reporting (registration required) that BitTorrent creator Bram Cohen has been hired by Valve Software to work on their Steam content distribution system:

Out of the blue, he heard from Gabe Newell, the managing director of Valve Software, based in nearby Bellevue, Wash. Valve is developing what gaming experts anticipate will be a blockbuster video game, Half-Life 2, but it is also creating an online distribution network that it calls Steam. Because of Mr. Cohen's expertise in just that area, Valve offered him a job. He moved to Seattle and started work in October.

We've been experimenting with BitTorrent with limited success in our files section - it seems the vast majority of users still prefer regular downloads to BitTorrent downloads, and of those few that do use BitTorrent, a limited number actually leave it running to continue to seed the download for other users (that is, upload data to the other peers).

Such a system built into something like Steam, for example - which you have to keep running as long as you keep playing - would probably have significant benefits, as there would be a vast number of users that would have little (or perhaps even no?) control over their system uploading data while they're playing games. It will be interesting to see how Valve and Bram choose to implement such a system.

I think the point is many people (myself included) don't like the idea of software REQUIRED in order to play a game being deliberately set up to prevent you from having control over your net activity.

Frankly, forcing my machine to be used for uploading information is exactly what "illegal" worms and "trojanized" spyware do...I personally think that it's really walking a fine line to make a purchased game require the use of non-purchased software which makes the purchaser's computer do things they don't want it to do...and it's DEFINATELY immoral in my eyes.

if i were valve id fire gabe newell and hire the goatse atleast that way he wouldnt come up with shit asshole ideas he has came up with

it would be really funny if someone made a worm that spread though steam and disabled bittorrent so that they had to release a new patch just to undo what the worm did i would laugh on the outside at that one

the fact that they require you to uploade makes it the worst idea the have ever thought of.

dont say omg im not getting it its on steam cuz ur goona get it anyway because hl2 looks sweet as fuck... maybe doom3 will be a shitload better and hl2 will die.

dliong games is a fucking joke... what happens if ur hd dies or u get a virus and u have to reformat? then how will u get ur hl2 back without paying AGAIN

There have already been some hacks released that use Steam to "open up" the target machine...they're pretty worthless, so far, but if someone wanted to, I expect it would be pretty easy to expoilt, since the basics of the program haven't changed all that much since the leak that included the Steam code.

Sounds like it might be a worthwhile project, APC....

doom3 is gonna own hl2

it's because of gay shit like this that i don't play hl/cs anymore and wont be buying hl2. valve can go fuck themselves. i recommend that everyone stop supporting them and move on to future games like battlefield vietnam.

either do that or just burn it onto a cd..

ill be dl hl2 then going to a store, buying the game grabbing the cdkey and taking it back half hour later saying i brought it for my bro who already has it.

steam sucks ass. really, for all those who are on dialup not unlimited access. the game is going to cost them soooo much more if they have to download steam as well, its a hidden cost in the hl/mods of games.

those fucking ignorant pricks. The reason why people shut off bittorrent after dlaod, is because people (like me) have isps that have limited dloads and uploads, I only have like 3 gb of upload and 10 gb of dload a month. After downloading shit like kotor, gothic 2, and a radiohead album, i have 2.75 upload used up. if they do that gay shit with steam, that would completely kill my cable bill. good thing i don't play cs anymore.

valve got cocky, they're not gonna last long in business if they're gonna have everyone download hugh files. Some people have caps, some have dialup. They're going to lose alot of potential customers with their ignorance.

Gabe Newell weights a massive ton, he consumes at least 10 000 calories a day. He is ignorant about his health therefore the shit his company produces sucks. Geniuses like Cliffy B and Todd Hollenshed will outlast dumbfuck Newell.

I'm from Australia, and only recently 10 gig limits become availiable on cable for a reasonable price. Downloading a massive game would put a big dent in the month obviously, and the continued use of steam makes this worse.

Most of the other people I know would have to spend a substantial amount of time downloading a full game, which would take up an even higher portion of their caps. I doubt they would bother for this reason, regardless of the game.

Good thing I got sick of it and uninstalled.

Steam Offically Gay, Again.

Why state the obvious?
