In grade school he was an excellent artist, but he lacked the ability to get good grades. He studied architecture but went back to decorative arts. M. C. Escher left the school in 1922 with experience in woodworking and drawing. He went to Italy to find the woman to whom he would marry. He settled down with his wife, Jetta Umiker, in Rome. He quickly moved to Switzerland after Mussolini became unbearable. He moved two more times and finally settled in Baarn, Netherlands.
