Posted November 5, 200618 yr Ever heard of the "Honors" or "Advanced Placement" classes in most highschools? Maybe you're in one or have taken them in the past. Well what they are are specialized courses that expand the workload, intellectual exercising, and learning in general of the student enrolled in that class. These classes contain a HUGE amount of homework, taking up all of your time. I am a sophomore at my highschool, currently enrolled in 3 honors classes and 1 advanced placement class. When I get home I immediately find myself engrossed in homework. I come home, do homework, eat, sleep, wake up early in the morning to do more homework, and go back to school. I have no spare time to engage in hobbies or communicate with peers. You might say I have "no life". And at what purpose am I pushing myself to this limit? To get into a good college? Why? I have no clue what college I might want to attend, as I have no time to research it, and even if I did, I have no clue what I might be interested in majoring in. I do know that I enjoy preparing various meals for myself on weekdays and have made an assortment of goods from homemade bread and pasta, cookies, dinner pies, soup, and other basic dishes. None of that, mind you, is heating up prepackaged foods, but making it from following recipes. I find myself happy after making a meal and become excited at trying new things. It occurred to me that I might wish to attend a culinary school instead of a college to possible grasp a chance at getting a career pertaining to cooking and the like. If that is my life goal, then why in the world am I continuing to gain near sleepless nights slaving over homework for these cruel classes of mine? I have no time to practice my art. I have recently had a discussion with a peer who was not in any of these honors classes, but rather in the lowest classes or fundamentals if you will. He was enrolled in several art classes, however, and after reviewing his work, I was quite impressed. He was a junior, he told me, and had already a college and career as a concept artist picked out for him. He seems to have a complete grasp of his future and current life, while I have very little. Why am I, the hard worker, bogged down with these endless tasks daily, and to receive no ability to foresee my own future? On rare occasions when I have little work to do, I find myself lost in a world without labor, a place with nothing to do. It is a sad life I lead. But I digress. My theory is as follows: If students are in advanced courses and receive maximum amounts of work that take up all of their time, then they will have less of a chance to live happily in a career that suits their enjoyment, whilst those with little work but great direction will enjoy their future work very much and look forward to doing it. Also: There are four types of students (has been broadened): The hardworking who do well The hardworking who do not do well due to mismanaged time The laid-back who do well The laid-back who fail and do not care Where should I go with my life? Should I aim for college or culinary school? What do you think of my theory? Thanks for reading.

Yes, 5 AP classes this year. She has no life outside of school. It has become a big issue for her and I to hang out anymore because she spends all of her time in her room either doing homework for 1 of 5 AP classes or is studying for that next AP test that is just around the corner. Bravo at wanting to practice a seemingly dying art of cooking, or 'culinary arts' I would suggest that if you are to prepare yourself for your future you should start taking classes that would help you get into a college that best fits what you want to do in life, if you don't really know what you want to do then I'd balance out AP classes with normal ones, taking no more than 2 a year. You obviously have thought more about this than the normal highschool drones have, and I'm glad to see that such intelligence has graced this forum. Its been a while... Fools who do no work, do drugs, and do brain-dead activities all day long." For that remark though, ouch. I do drugs.. a lot, and I maintain a 3.5 and have my entire 4 years (Senior year now) in high school. ap courses are easy cause its all tests Bullshit. Go back to high school. Edit: I have recently had a discussion with a peer who was not in any of these honors classes, but rather in the lowest classes or fundamentals if you will. My theory is as follows: Haha, I am one of these students I suppose. I already have had a college accept me, I know completely what I want to do with my life. I, however, don't take the lowest classes possible. I just take the normal classes and a little above (Chemistrry, physics, and the like) If you have the chance I'd sit down with your parents and a computer and find out which colleges are around your area (Or perhaps you'd like to study abroad?) that appeal to your interests.

November 5, 200618 yr America's AP classes are equivalent of other nation's regular classes. Just keep in mind that we're borderline retarded living in a such developed nation. Why do you think a good deal of our doctors and engineers are foreign?

I have great grades and am in the top 5-10% of my class, with excellent chances of getting into most colleges. But I am having trouble finding time for hobbies, what with my busy schedule. I'd rather do something that I enjoy (even if the pay is poor) rather than having to regret getting up to go to a pain in the ass job every day (even if the pay is phenomenal). I agree though that complaining about workloads is non beneficiary. Dropping classed is not something I look highly upon. I guess I will do the work that I need to for my classes, and try to ease up the classes next year, so I can begin thinking of careers. Also, thanks to Tom, your suggestions are appreciated. I will look into the colleges around my area and out of state.
November 5, 200618 yr before you go to a culinary art school, get a job at a restuarant that has alot of buisness (not a fastfood or diner) start out as a dishwasher and you'll quickly learn what it is like working in a kitchen, when you work in a kitcfhen its not the same as cooking a meal for yourself at home its wayyyy different, so just make sure before u waste time at culinary art school you check out the environment in the back of a kitchen and see what really goes on.
November 5, 200618 yr I am category 4: - Lazy people who only do as much as they have to, but get into the course they want and have a career in something they enjoy. My advice would be to figure out want you want to do, then find out how to start making wuick progression with it. In your case researching college courses on cooking and find out what you need to be able to get into one, then ditch the useless courses your taking and focus on cooking.
November 5, 200618 yr That might be true that you don't have to take AP classes to be happy. But colleges looking at your transcript and not being happy won't make you happy. PS: Hi George Orwell!

November 5, 200618 yr hey threadstarter, haha, what a big bag of rediculous fail you are. i wanked my school life up the wall. seriously, i failed almost all of my gcse's becuase i didn't even turn up to them, i've been running my own buisness for just over 3 months (Digital prints on canvas, and boosting peoples photos/digital photos to massive sizes and printing them on canvas, (USING CRACKED SOFTWARE BTW LOLZ) (thats bringing in £700 profit a week at the moment) I'm currently taking opn a project from EMI records (Iron madiens record label, and alot more, including lilly alan actually).. And WITH WHAT?1... A peice of paper telling me that i can design?...Work my fucking balls off like a fucking monkey wasting time, learning shit you'll never ever fucking need in this world?.. Man, you're the fucking loser in all this. You are.
November 5, 200618 yr [*]Laid-back idiots who will fall into a hobby they like a further increase their ability in it, to a point where they can make a living off of it. Das' me! I want to be a filmmaker or some shit, working on that.
November 5, 200618 yr used to be in them, got 70's and 80's because i don't do hw and don't give a shit. dropped them, am doing the same amount of work as before and getting high 80's low-mid 90's. which do YOU think looks better to colleges? only reason i dropped them is because i knew i could get grades that looked better to a college with minimal effort. eventually i'll start doing my hw and i'll have 90's in almost everything and i'll probably end up in the top 10% of my class because our school is loaded with dumbshits. last year i was ranked #28 with a fucking 78 overall in honors classes(so yes it's weighted but not by much) so that gives you an idea about how horrible our students are around here.
November 5, 200618 yr My theory on the advnaced courses available to highschool students. lol for someone so smart or trying to pretend to be so smart...you are a retard i only wish i knew what you looked like/acted like in real life

November 5, 200618 yr ahahahahahahah homework, never heard of such a concept people with poor learning ability take loads of time to do homework... so basically if you know it takes you a while to do homework, and you don't want to work hard to do well in the class, don't take challenging classes my advice is to do what you want to do, you will have a more enjoyable time doing so... it's not like you have to take these courses to get into college anyway There are three types of students: Hardworking simpletons who have no direction and no foresight in to their future. Laid-back idiots who will fall into a hobby they like a further increase their ability in it, to a point where they can make a living off of it. Fools who do no work, do drugs, and do brain-dead activities all day long. I disagree, I don't fit in any of those categories
