This is what happens when Silver Nitrate (AgNO3) comes into contact with your skin.

After performing a redox displacement reaction, I had to rinse out the test tubes, unfortuately, the high-pressure science lab taps splashed some onto my fingers.

Even though some Silver Nitrate had been reduced by Copper, the effects can be blemishing, although it is only on my fingers. Plz SIlver Notrate dont turn me into a ******.

More details of the practical.

Test tube # 1 - Piece of Magnesium and Silver Nitrate (AgNO3) solution

Mg2+ + 2e- --> Mg(s) -2.36V

2Ag+ + 2e- --> 2Ag(s) 0.80V

Copper oxidises in the presence of silver ions.

Mg(s) --> Mg2+ + 2e- +2.36V

Redox reaction:

Mg(s) + 2Ag+ --> Mg2+ + 2Ag(s)

Test tube # 2 - Piece of Copper and Silver Nitrate (AgNO3) solution

Cu2+ + 2e- --> Cu(s) 0.52V

2Ag+ + 2e- --> 2Ag(s) 0.80V

Copper oxidises in the presence of silver ions.

Cu(s) --> Cu2+ + 2e- -0.52V

Redox reaction:

Cu(s) + 2Ag+ --> Cu2+ + 2Ag(s)

rofl i got some concentrated nitric acid on my finger and the tip of my finger was a yellow color for over a month

"Concentrated nitric acid dyes human skin yellow on contact, due to interactions with the skin protein keratin. "

Oh good you're not lying somehow.

thats because I'm a biochem major, so yes I actually work with this chemicals

some chick spilled a bunch on herself and had to go to the hospital =/
