The throwing of such meaningless insults towards other users on this thread, and the aggravation that leads to a just as meaningless comeback, suggests that rage is the result of one's tolerance, emotions, and often, moral standings (the essences of raging). The rager can rage his target whether he is raged himself, as this thread demonstrates, or if he is not raged at all, as most raging on games occurs. The extent that the raged victim become angered will depend on the three essences. Tolerance: The extent of how much someone can take being insulted. Emotion: A person's feelings and current mood. Moral Standings: This is different for all people; certain things either cultural or personal that one is touchy about. These three "essences" are what create the primal feeling of rage. Your analogy of the tree in the forest is correct for the most part, but with out their rage being demonstrated, you do not know if you have actually raged. You take for granted that if you insult, you rage. This is not always the case. You could go onto a gaming server and talk about Hitler all day. The other users could be completely unaffected by this if they are not Jewish. The only way, I think, to tell if rage has occurred is to see them express it.
