December 26, 200618 yr qft The movie wasn't about racism. Racism was just the medium used becuase it made the viewer see both sides of his struggle. Without using racism you wouldn't have had dislike (or maybe liking for some of you guys) for the character, and it wouldn't have given the base of his character, which gave a clear view into his family function and inner thoughs.. And without those thoughts on him it would have been much harder to see his change and understand it. Maybe thats why it seems so many people here missed the point of the film... you all LIKED him as a racist, so you didn't see how his problems became those of his family, and therfor didnt think he even needed to make the change, so you didn't see or understand the change he had to go through. The movie could have been made and displayed the exact same message without racism. Racism was just the easy and by far best way of showing the characters struggle, because it is something most of us have had to deal with at one time or another. The point of this film was far more about his internal struggle, and his search not only to solve it, but to solve it in a way that would best benifit and reunite his family at the same time, than it was about racism. Racism was just used as the visual 'fabric' to give the movie something tangable and personal to alomst all viewers. Shame it seems so many people here missed the point... they seem to me to be the ones most likly to benifit from it's message. ^^ English Teacher. God I hate English teachers who find deeper meaning in a film or text that would have been originally intended by the creator. Look at Shakespeare, here we are writing thousands of words about obscure referances and plots, is it possible that maybe, just maybe, it was intended to be an interesting story? Nothing more? American History X is a good movie, it provokes thought and emotions. That does NOT mean that it should be ripped apart. The more you look into things like this, the more you find things that fit what you want to find. I could just as easily say that this is a movie based around facsist propaganda to gain fresh converts. Far-fetched, yes. But no more than your take on things.

Speaking of missing the point... lmao I wasn't talking about what I "say" the movie is about, or "my take on things". I was talking about what David McKenna himself said he wanted the film to do/be, and the lesson he wanted it to teach.

Is that why I just read on the American History X website that the film is about extremism in America?

In most cases what a film is "about" is the means to show the meaning. I love shrimp. And I also like bacon. Bacon Wrapped Shrimp is where it's at.
