The flap involving Democrat Keith Ellison deals more with symbol than substance since House members are sworn in as a group with no Bibles or other texts involved.

 

Plans by the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress to use the Koran as part of his swearing-in ceremonies have unleashed criticism from people who think he should use a Bible.

 

The flap involving Keith Ellison, a Democrat elected to the House of Representatives from Minnesota last month, deals more with symbol than substance since House members are sworn in as a group with no Bibles or other texts involved.

 

In fact the U.S. Constitution states that "no religious test shall ever be required" to hold public office.

 

But in a country where three out of every four people consider themselves Christian, the Bible has traditionally been used in ensuing unofficial ceremonies. These events among other things provide each member with an individual photo opportunity.

 

Strict immigration policies

 

Ellison began hearing growls and gripes from the blogosphere and at least one conservative radio commentator after he said he would use the Koran in his unofficial ceremony.

 

The controversy grew this week with disclosure of a letter Rep. Virgil Goode, a Virginia Republican, wrote to some of his constituents saying, "The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt (my) position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran."

 

He called for strict immigration policies, especially crafted to keep Muslims out of the United States.

 

Damn Virginia! I thought I lived in Free Country US of A! How can we ban Muslims from immigrating to our Free and Beautiful Country? The misconception that Muslims are terrorists has grown out of proportion. I am even thinking, since the Muslim faith is widely practiced in the black community, that the Virginia Congressman's view is mainly in place because of a possible deeply set racism and hatred to the black people of this nation. Boo! Hiss!

    dude this country is so out of whack "value"wise as well as morally. seriouslyy i can not even begin to express my frustration for some of the political and societal changes that have been happening recently. i feel like we are having backwards evolution. its to frustrating to even know where to begin. yuck.

    Don't worry about it, the US has stagnated and is destroying itself under the weight of itself. It will fall like every other empire and we'll all have to learn Chinese.

    I have a feeling that due to China's current demographics, their economic boom will be short lived unless they do something.

     

    This is an excellent example of American hypocrisy. The Constitution clearly states that there should be a separation of church and state yet people still try to impose their religious beliefs onto the government. I'm an atheist/former christian and I believe that if we don't want to go back to the Middle Ages when the church had more influence over the people than the government did, we must secularize our government, schools, and country and limit religion to homes and religious worshiping areas such as churches, mosques, synagogues, etc.

     

    Edit: Freedom of religion. If that guy wants to be sworn in using the Quran, let him. Goode has no right to impose his religious views on Ellison.

    I do have to disagree, China's demographics along with their communist government seem to be ideal.

     

    They have an abundance of cheap labor and can dispose of the "dead weight" that holds America down. This would be the elderly and other such groups that take a lot of resources to maintain without contributing anymore.

     

    However having a good base to work from doesn't guarantee anything, and global issues will also take a role, so only time will tell if the new leader is able to utilize this force.

    Yes I believe China's status as an Economic superpower will slow down. Pretty much agree w/ the rest of the post aswell.

    I agree with you two, when being sworn in they should only have to place their hand on their heart or something similar without the use of religious texts. Since the tradition of using the Bible has been already established, however, I think that alternative documents should be allowed.

    Free Country USA was founded by the Virginia Company settlements, with the hopes of finding a reliable source of profit in the lands. The religious settlements in Massachusetts came a few decades later.

    I totally understand what the Virginia Rep. Is worried about. Look at England!! No wonder British people are so pissed off all the time...its run by Muslims. They say one thing against a Muslim and London goes into flames..just like the recent Parisian riots. The greater the arab muslim population the greater the mindless violence and destruction.
