Posted January 19, 200718 yr Im going to buy a new HD soon. I have a Western Digital Caviar SE WD2000JD 200GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150. I want to buy a smaller HD maybe around 80gb just for the OS and the one i have now will be for games, movies etc... The question is what do i have to look for to make sure its compatible? And would it be better to have a bigger cache on the OS drive? Maybe this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822135106 Paired with the one i already own. Im still learning about PC shit and this is one subject i havent read up on, but im about to start. So any help, links, flames, jew jokes (even tho im irish but jew jokes are always funny) are all welcome.
January 19, 200718 yr Just make sure your motherboard has another Ata/150 port. If not you will need to purchase a HDD Controller. Although if your gonna do a setup like that. I'd suggest getting the WD Raptor. It spins at 10k RPMs instead of 7,200. This is how I would do that setup. Raptor - OS + Games Caviar - Music + Movies + Programs that don't need speed (torrents, limewire, itunes, etc..)
January 19, 200718 yr yes a bigger cache is better because like your proc's cache, its a temporary storage area where frequently accessed data can be stored for rapid access, thus reducing the time to run several freqently used programs.
February 13, 200718 yr Author Ok i ordered the new HD, even though i would love a Raptor or better yet a 15,000rpm drive money is an issue. So a few things i would like to get answered before i go into the installation. Ive built my last 2 PC's so im totally retarded but then again ill be without the internet while im doing this. Well one thing ive learn is that Raiding is a NO since the drives are not the same, unless i was miss informed. So how will these drives hook up? 1 Western Sata 3.0 and the older Caviar? Both use their own Sata cable directly into the Motherboard? And since i cant Raid them will this cause a problem i.e. performance or anything? Or will the 2 drive just show up with different letters and basically like partitions do? And lastly, since theres no Raid will they show up as 1 drive or 2 seperate? Again like partitions?
February 14, 200718 yr I'd say just grab a 500 GB for $130. They're fucking cheap now! I haven't looked at Newegg in a long time. With a 500, you'll probably never worry about memory again, and if you wanted to get spiffy, you could partition it for games/movies/shit/OS.

YEs the two drives will show up in my computer but they'l be with different drive letters.
