Hey all, this guide is written by me(frithead/merhorse) and is for use on this site. And this site ONLY. It is 14 pages of photoshop goodness and is helpful for people of all levels.

NOTE: Please report broken image links, and lost images so that i can update

Lets start off with the basics of Photoshop, the tools

TOOL BAR

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/8748/toolbarcg1.jpg

This is the toolbar, your number one Photoshop necessity. I am going to go through all the tools now

THE MARQUEE TOOL

http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/6202/marqueezx4.jpg

These are great for selecting shapes. The tools are pretty self-explanatory and if used correctly can make great cuts

THE CURSOR TOOL

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/1660/cursorlt8.jpg

Also another obvious one. This allows you to drag and move images

LASSO TOOL

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/9349/lassonf0.jpg

This is great for blending and cutting techniques. You can cut out an image by going around it with a lasso tool. Here are the types of lassos

NORMAL LASSO: like the pencil tool only it draws an invisible outline

POLYGONAL LASSO: draws straight lines and is great for borders.

MAGNETIC LASSO: this is used mainly for cutting out images and sticks to colours and shapes to get the best cut.

THE MAGIC WAND TOOL

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/2264/magicwandvh5.jpg

This tool is great for selecting backgrounds. It will select all of a certain colour - Change its tolerance to select colours more or less in a colour range

THE BRUSH AND PENCIL TOOL

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/7499/brushtoollh5.jpg

THE STAMP AND ART HISTORY BRUSH TOOLS

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/2879/brushandstampse5.jpg

Another lot of tools that serve no real purpose for sig makers

THE ERASER TOOLS

BLUR SHARPEN AND SMUDGE TOOLS

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/8736/burnshitloluy5.jpg

These aren’t really essential but can come in handy. Their names say all there is too them

THE DODGE BURN SMUDGE TOOLS

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/121/wrongloltb2.jpg

Also not very essential but can bring out allot in your images.

BURN TOOL: gives the image a bronzed effect

SMUDGE TOOL: smudges it up

DODGE TOOL: this makes the image lighter

IMAGE BLENDING

Here are 3 styles of image blending

1. Get the image you want to blend into a sig and lasso roughly around it.

Set the feather too 20 and select inverse (ctrl+shift+I) press delete or backspace. Now go to the saturation (ctrl+U) and set it to -100. To finish place the layer with the image on it under the colour balance layer.

2. Once the image is in your sig get the rubber tool selected and set with a soft grunge brush. Brush around the edges with the rubber and it will blend in. then u have to set the saturation to -100 and place it under the color balance layer

3. Lasso around the image roughly and select inverse. Now go to layer mask hide selection. Set the saturation to -100 and put it under the colour balance

This concludes the blending part

SIGS!!!

Now onto the serious stuff. There are 3 main types of sigs. Grunge, Abstract and Tech. The type of sig that you make is decided on by the type of brushes you use, grunge and abstracts are the same to make, but tech is extra

NORMAL SIGS

GRUNGE

These are really easy to make

1.just go to filter>>render>>clouds

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4193/grunge1wb0.jpg

2.now start brushing lightly with a grunge brush in black

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5146/grunge2yc3.jpg

3.make a new layer and brush lightly with a grunge brush in white

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/9338/grunge3qs0.jpg

4.repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have 3-6 layers or it is looking sexy

5.add a colour balance.

6.bask in the glory of your sig

TECH

Ok these take a long time to do but are well worth the extra effort.

You will need some grunge/abstract brushsets and a tech set--reccomended wurklash big tech--

1. Press "D" to reset your colours and start by going to filter>>render>>clouds

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4193/grunge1wb0.jpg

2. Get out Abstract or Grungee brushes and start brushing in black. Make a new layer and start brushing in white. Repeat this for 3-6 layers until u have something you like

4. Now add a color balance

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6573/techcolourye1.jpg

5. --OPTIONAL-- Get an image you want in the sig and put it in there. Press ctrl+U and set the saturation to -100. Now get the lasso tool and draw a circle around the image. set the feather to about 20 then ctrl+shift+I. now finally press delete and place the image under the color balance

6. Now for the tech part. this takes a long time to do and doesnt always bring out the best results. Make a new layer under the colour balance layer but ontop of all the others and set the master opacity to around 50-80%. Then just brush in white but space it out and take your time with the placing.

i did a quick job with this so yours will probably look better than mine but here is the final product

BORDERS

yes finally the part where we spruce up your images im gonna go over 2 types of borders

3 PIXEL BORDERS

these are small but very effective.

step one. make a new layer and select all

step two. go to edit>>stroke and set it to 3 pixels

step three. make another new layer and select all. go to stroke and make it 2 pixels and the blending mode to clear

step 4. make a final new layer and select all. set go to stroke and make it 1 pixel and also set the blending back to normal

and thats how to make 3 pixel borders.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7821/pixelborderiu0.jpg

TECH BORDERS

these are very popular and easy to do

1. use the polygonal lasso tool and make something like this

2. select inverse (ctrl+I)

3. put the border on a new layer of your sig and fill it with black.

4. now go to blending options and use the gradient effect to give it a nice lighting. u can basicly fiddle round with the effects until you get what you want. after placing the border under the colour balance it should look something like this

LOST IMAGES: Updating them later

THIS CONCLUDES THE BORDER SECTION

TEXT

text is easily fiddled round with to make look awesome. so im not gona make a section on it.
