Posted February 2, 200718 yr Hi, Just got a new hard drive, to add to the PC. Maxtor ATA 150 300GB. Problem is lately for some reason, sometimes my system will freeze up for about 3 seconds and will then stop upon a loud click from the hard drive. Also, I loaded up a lot of shit from my other HD to even out the space, and when I run games from the new hard drive, they'll freeze up as well sometimes, sometimes it'll even BSoD on me with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. So I'm thinking, okay maybe it's just getting hot I'll move it farther away from the other HD, but whoopdedoo, I can't get the fucking screws to come off, and I don't feel like risking it with a hammer's nail remover. I've googled up shit and it says the clicking usually means it's old and needs replacing, but I bought it brand new from Fry's(major electronics store). Anyone got any ideas before I decide to throw the thing back into the Fry's store?
February 2, 200718 yr i'd just return it to be safe. if you have the same problem with a new one, then move it away from the other hdd

But, right now I'm doing a ScanDisk and will be doing a Chkdsk at reboot, and if those don't help, I'll go with your advice. Thanks.
February 4, 200718 yr Had way too many probs with Maxtors , I returned 3 different maxtors on one order from Newegg about 4 months ago . Since then I have switched to WD Raptor and hitachi brand HD. the Hitachi's I will have to say are the quietest drives I have found . Just wish they would pre-set them To SATA II , it's a pain in the ass to switch them from Sata I - Sata II Return it
February 4, 200718 yr Author Just got back from exchanging it for the exact same HD. Installed it exactly the way it should be, and decided to test it out by installing a game. While installing it, it started clicking and freezing just like it did with the other hard drive. Perhaps the problem is my computer... Is it bad to combine an IDE and SATA drive?

Not realy, I have a mix of the two on my pc. What file format you using? Use NTFS. What is the speed of this HDD, and buffer size? What is your motherboard and chipset versions? Give that informaton, I should be able to help you.

February 4, 200718 yr Looking at the specs, there's no reason why it would do this during normal operations, unless its busted. First, check on boot-up that 'SMART' is enabled on the drive - it's turned on & off in the BIOS. Second thing; Its a maxtor, very unreliable. You might need a BIOS update for your pc to use it properly. Do that if there's a newer version available. Have you re-installed windows? If no, do it. Then if it keeps going, do a full 'chkdsk /r' on that drive. After that, if you dont get any results that are worth getting your money back through Maxtor you should check all cables its connected with and change them around. If none of this works, you're fucked. Lastly, incase you have data on it already : freezing bad drive overnight can temporarily help to retrieve data from bad drive, but never tried myself.
February 4, 200718 yr It's very rare but your IDE port might be going if none of the things posted by Myriad seem to fix the problem. have you ever used it before you installed the hd? is there any dust in the port? Have you tested out the hd on another port in your comp? (if you have an ide dvd drive then you might have to switch it from its port so you can test out the hd) Have you ever had an ATA hd installed to your comp in the past, specifically on this port? Lastly try installing the hd to another comp in your house if possible to see if you experience the same problems with the hd.

February 5, 200718 yr Lastly, incase you have data on it already : freezing bad drive overnight can temporarily help to retrieve data from bad drive, but never tried myself. I've done this many times. It works. The problem is, you don't know for how long it'll work. Some HD's would start clicking after 10 minutes, and others would start clicking after 2 hours. It does work, tho.
