you're probably all fucking sick of hearing about vista, but i was wondering how many people here have an actual working version. I've heard rumors that it can wreck your whole computer by not being able to run software, that includes not being able to return back to XP

Thanks.

Ummm never heard of that, only heard that alot of stuff cant run on it (games mostly) and it having stability issues but never anything like that.

Im waiting for it to get finished dl'ing then im going to try it, ill let you know what happens.

Edit: How would not be able to run software make it unable to return to XP. Unless it can fry your HD or something that sounds impossible.

when you install vista, microsoft deactivates you XP key so you cannot go back to XP unless you buy a new copy.

must be complete bullshit cuz i switched from xp to vista and back a few times in the past 3 months

In general its not too bad. I just wouldnt upgrade to it yet. The only version that seems worthy is the Home Prem. cuz you get all the good shit without paying out the ass for Ultimate.

I've gone from XP to Vista and vice versa alot of times now. Thats a bunch of BS. UNLESS you have a Dell / HP / MDG / Mac(that new windows on mac shit).

13. UPGRADES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligiblefor the upgrade. Upon upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the agreement for the software you upgraded from. After you upgrade, you may no longer use the software you upgraded from.

Why did you buy an upgrade, you do realise thats stupid right?

i didn't buy shit, i have never bought a microsoft product.

It's funny you say that about the progs wrecking your comp because that jsut happened to me about a week ago. I am dual booting vista ultimate and xp on two different hds on my comp. (used the eval. crack for vista sinc ei couldnt get a working product key)

SO jsut the other day im surfing the net, looking at my emails and downloading a torrent. the torrent finishes buti realize that its an image that i need to burn so intead of rebooting and waitng for xp to load, i decide to install my burning prog, alcohol 120. (I usualy use nero but i couldnt find the .rar)

SO its an older version of alcohol, come corporate edition with a crack. it installs fine up until the last bit of files (probably drivers) when my comp all of a sudden crashes and i get a blue screen like the xp BSOD except that the screen is jsut all blue. (maybe i had to set it inpower options to not restart after system error). so now im like ok, ill jsut uninstall the drivers from windows vista in my regualr os after i log on. i log on and the same shit happens.

Safe mode. restart. I even try ERD commander to help recover my system resotre point and that can't detect it ( i need to update many of my progs BADLY) So i reinstalled vista and now im wondering if any other prog will do the same shit because soem of the companies who made my programs are out of business and don't have new verisons out for the prog.

Im still wondering how they can LEGALLY do that. The whole blacklisting key thing. I would be so fucking pissed if that happened (but i pirate just like everyone else who has an IQ above 30)

So can anyone verify this? I use the student edition of xp (or the key) that basically cant be blacked out because it was handed out as a teaching tool or some bullshit so if my key got blacked then that would get at least 3 or 5 thousand people (some actual college students) blacklisted, probably more.

BTW if anyone wants to use the key, PM me. I get all the updates plus i pass that verification thing without any registry edits or whatever. Not sure if its just the key or the actual copy of XP that does but it works.

Call MS and axx them. They'll let you know exactly how it works.

Also, the key you're using expires after a certain amount of years. Get a backup.

i picked up vista around december 20th. Build 5600. Enterprise.

Vista has a lot of kinks to work out such as a "CTO Surrogate" problem that occurs when trying to read media. Also RunDll keeps failing.

Dual Layer Disks fail often for me. also you can't format them to the vista format w/e its called.

don't format your ipod. You are fucked until an update.

I am upgrading to ultimate the full build sometime next week, but until then i see a lot of room for improvemnt.

Also:: almost forgot.

If you are running a program running in Java. Uhh lets say an example is a Chess game. Lets say you want to save chess games and open them in the java chess program it will attempt to jus topen it as a .class file.

I don't know why its just semi-retarded.

From my experience with vista so far i would not recommend it to anyone at the moment
wait 6 months to a year before making vista your primary os. There are still many kinks and driver problems.
Let's say I make the hard drive i use now my slave on my new computer which will come with vista. Will I be able to boot from my slave drive and go into xp if I needed to?

downloaded the 64bit Ultimate version last sunday, put it on in Monday. Runs really well. Really nice to look at. The only performance drop i received was a -5fps in the CSS stress test. Now i get 115fps (so no complaints). But that is because i havent Oced my card again, as NVTweak is buggy in Vista.

I think its fuckin sweet. But ill prob go back to Xp after a while.

Thanks

you can get an RC1 key from MS if you sign up on there site

I already have one.. but thanks

I installed Vista Ultimate (legit) and so far haven't had a real bad time.

Issues:

  • 1/2 of my 1GB of RAM is always in use.
  • Finding the right media player for AVI playback is proving difficult.
  • MY hacked copy of Office 2007 gives me a shitload of macro errors every time I start and app.
  • Drivers are very immature.
  • Classic joystick ports are no longer supported.
  • ISS has gotten complex as hell and I need help relearning that.
  • DreamScene is a pig.
  • DirectSound has been abolished. No more EAX (until ALchemy is done, and no one knows if Audigy users will ever get to use it)

Positives:

  • Its purdy.
  • 95% of my applications work.
  • The built in Scan and Fax application works great (for scanning at least).
  • Project 64 works better, for some reason.
  • Team Fortress Classic works as good as ever.

Its not a bad OS. Just be ready to get more RAM. Honestly, there is NO NEED to upgrade to it. It has no incredible features. I got my copy for free from a Microsoft buddy, and that is the only reason I am running it.

I reformatted and installed vista. i got a 30fps boost in css. great! ithought.

Spent all day finding drivers that worked somewhat for my hardware. Then i boot up fear to find they disabled directsound. Great! Now my new soundcard is a useless lump of plastic.

Uninstalled vista, put XP pro back on. i get another 30fps boost over vista. So by reformatting i now get 150fps. yummy.

I'd use vista if their drivers were better and directsound was put back in.

Really, what the fuck?
