Posted April 2, 200718 yr Can someone list a bevy of the best processors on the market right now? Also how effective is dual-core in terms of gaming performance. I know most games aren't written to fully take advantage of parallel processing but upcoming games like "Alan Wake" are beginning to take advantage of multiple threads. Also I've been hearing that Pentium D's architecture is quite shitty...although I have a pentium D and 1g and pretty much max out any game out there right now. Thirdly, Intel Duo vs. AMD dual-core...which is better??????
April 2, 200718 yr I had an AMD dual core and wasn't impressed. I switched to Intel Core 2 Duo and like it alot. The pentium D's are garbage. Intel's frantic half-assed response to AMD's 64 bit chips. I vote Core 2 Duo.
April 3, 200718 yr Depends on what your doing with it. I know that sounds vague. But it all depends on the chipset. The majority of the AMD Dual Cores are easily OCed and get a good few .6Ghz out of them and more. But If you look at the Intel Duos, they OC well but not as safely or stable. IMO, if i could build my PC over again I would have bought an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Processor ... The e6300 is a stock 1.8Ghz, shit for now adays standards, but it can oc to over 3.2Ghz and potentially more with basically no problems at all. And its cheap as hell too. Its up to you, check out the CPU section of http://www.ocforums.com CPU forums Just look around and youll soon see which ones are the best. EDIT: The majority of games dont take advantage of the Dual-Core, altho AMD have the Dual-Core optimizer patch, which i think gave me a big performance boost, as it spreads the load of the 1 game app over the two, not really using the full potential of dual core but still works. Oblivion supports it, Stalker supports it, Quake 4 Supports it, Cod2 does too and source will by the end of this year.
April 5, 200718 yr Are you planning on buying now? If you are, can you wait until May or later this year? The reason I ask is there will be price drops by both AMD and Intel in may, and they will both be introducing newer processors in the fall (AMD K8L and Intel Penryn). Currently Intel Core 2 Duos are faster, by a bit, though the A64s are dirt cheap.
April 5, 200718 yr Intel quad-core core 2 Extreme QX6700 AMD are faster but that is just becaouse they are overclocked to be intel are really the better quality.
April 6, 200718 yr amd = overclock me so i can be slightly faster than an intel but last 1/3rd of the time i shoulda.
