yeah dude, there are very FEW cool italians. Most of the italians are douche bags with spiked hair and gucci sunglasses and attire. bunch of queers. All it means is that the power is supposed to be distributed equally. So like, the president cant be the only one to make the choices, it has to go through other people, like congress, senate, whatever. It's there to prevent dictorship and really really dumb bad choices. HOWEVER, its not full proof as we all know ahha

Examples of checks and balances:

congress makes a bad law--> president vetos

president vetso --> congress overrides with 2/3rd vote

supreme court rules against president --> president appoints justices

 

It basically places the branches of congress against each other so no one branch dominates the others, although the executive branch has gained a lot more power than the other two throughout the years.
