This woman presented with a grossly swollen right leg and an oozing wound on her right buttock, in delerium, raving with a sky-high fever. She had received an injection from a bush doctor and either the injection site was not properly cleaned, the needle was dirty, the injection itself was not sterile, or the woman was just plain unlucky and the injection site was contaminated after injection. The pus smelled mind-blowingly bad. Strep-A is the most common infecting agent, but we had no facilities for checking that so there was nothing to do but get to work cutting & debriding the wound and throwing the kitchen sink as far as antibiotics at it (of course our choice of antibiotics was so poor that we might have been better off to literally throw the kitchen sink at it).

 

This video is actually from the 2nd debridement. All we had for pain management & anesthesis was tylenol and ketamine, so you can hear her moaning during the surgery.

 

I know it is brutal, but so few people really appreciate the things they have. There is no real poverty in the US... not like other places on the planet. When was the last time you literally saw someone die of starvation? I can take you on a tour of places where you see it daily.

 

It makes me feel so guilty for the things I own and can do. I mean places like the mall, Kroger, Wal Mart, etc. are almost offensive to me. How DARE people in the midst of such plenty complaine when elsewhere in the world there are significant populations dying for lack of the basics of basics.

 

So if sometimes in my posts, I sound a bit blunt or unfeeling, forgive me. I have no patience for spoiled little brats, or terrorist pricks. There are true innocents in the world who need our help.

 

And one thing I have learned from surgery and cancer... when you find malignant tissue... cut it out and don't look back. Leave the second guessing to people who have no spine
