I know Ubuntu probably wins OVERALL, but what about visuals and/or look of it? I just ordered the free 64bit and 32bit of Ubuntu and i might switch but i AM kinda spoiled when it comes to looks.

I looked at a couple pics of Ubuntu and it looks very very VERY plain. So can you supe it up? I want a very standard OS that i can add-on stuff as i see fit instead of trying to strip it down. Like i've done with Vista.

I run Vista fine, no lag or errors really. But if i can use an OS that uses half the resources that Vista does and still make it look as good then im down.

So everyone PRAISES Ubuntu. Let me know why i should use it, and the performance increases, easier usage, less demanding OS things that everyone talks about.

i suggest if you want to get into myg0t you install slackware, you format your drives with it and partion them correctly then you use xterm to browse the internet like a real hacker

I don't really think that answers his question. I don't personally use that type of software, so I wouldn't know how it is better or worse that Vista.

Ummm....ok? Im not a hacker, i have more important shit to do like laundry.

And Tom what do you use then? I would like to have XP again but every copy ive had (torrents) has shit loads of errors in it and i always spend hours upon hours fixing random shit. Plus i cant DL shit now because my speed is at like 55kbs so it would take a month to get a fresh copy. And Microsoft wont let me downgrade since i dont have a PC that came with Vista installed. I could sell my copy of Vista an buy XP Pro but its more expensive than fucking Vista now???

Well, the normal Ubuntu install has a pretty good graphical interface(if thats what you mean)

But I'm sure you want to know how good it can look.....

You can go get graphical whats its for linux and install them. There are tons of them. I mean tons.

Just go look around(google) for screenshots of other peoples shit.

There's KDE : http://www.kde.org/

good shit(all screenshots are in low resolution btw)

I ordered the Ubuntu Free disc a couple weeks ago but i still havent got it so i just DL'd it. I was still kinda skeptical about trying but then i saw a video showing you how to dual boot with windows and its so easy its not even funny. So after watching that i saw some videos showing Beryl. Which i guess is like a theme for it but Jesus Christ. That shit looks insanely awesome. Im waiting to do it until i have a day off in case something goes wrong. But if you havent seen Beryl check it out its pretty cool.

Yeah thats another one. But you need a good system to handle its better options.

I didnt think you could use Compiz-Quinnstorm with Ubuntu. I read that they removed alot of its dependencies for Gnome. But read more on this product before you try and install it.

Very easy install too :

 #Beryl Core
x11-wm/beryl
x11-wm/beryl-core
x11-plugins/beryl-plugins
x11-plugins/beryl-dbus
x11-misc/beryl-manager
x11-misc/beryl-settings
x11-misc/beryl-settings-bindings
x11-apps/xlsclients
x11-proto/damageproto

#Window Decorators
x11-wm/emerald
x11-themes/emerald-themes
x11-wm/heliodor
x11-wm/aquamarine

And : x11-libs/cairo glitz svg pdf

Let me know how it works out.

I still suggest KDE over this one.

I didnt understand anything you just said. Ive never used Linux before so ill have to mess around with it to get the hang of it. I read somewhere how to install Beryl but it made no sense to me. Where to i put that stuff? Im used to .exe's doing the work for me.

As far as my system goes im pretty sure its good enough. I run vista ultimate really good. My boot time is maybe 10 seconds, if that, and i run pretty much anything without hangups or any type of lag. And Vista is a hog.

5600 am2 2.8ghz

Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4

2gb OCZ Reaper DDR2 800

Lastly: What is it? Is it like a theme just more complex? Or what? Like i said im new to Linux so i still have alot of reading to do.

Well, open your console. And then type in that piece of code I put up there(without the "#" 's). Its directly from the install manual for beryl.

That'll install beryl for you. There are no exe's for linux, unless you get a tar ball with the install stuff in there.

Search beryl on google and there are tons of pages on the installation. Its a fairly large re-haul of the visuals for your linux system.

Just be careful, I'm still not convinced it'll work fully on something that isn't gentoo.

Ok im installing now. I forgot to make a partition for the swap file and when i started gparted it just sat there. I have 2 gb so it should be good until its done and ill just make one with mkswap afterwards.

And now i understand the command lines and such i think. Just open up the terminal and paste? Is that really all you have to do to install Beryl?

Is that really all you have to do to install Beryl?

Yes, but then you mush rehash the system.(restart)

Ok so after frustrating myself for the last couple of hours im pretty much done with this, This shit is fucking retarded. I cant even install flash player. I cant install Beryl either. Its either file not found, or unrecognized command etc etc.... This is just to much shit compared to Download the file and click it.

It wouldnt let me post the code from the instructions I wanted to give you, so I makes a page for installation of beryl on Ubuntu

Follow the first set of instructions, if that dont work, there's another set of commands you can use for installation.

Hope it works this time.

I had followed the first one earlier this morning, so i tried the second one and got an error. It said the beryl package cant be found. So i fooled around with it some more and got it to where it says e: broken package. So now im stuck. Ive looked on the ubuntu forums and tried all those solutions to no avail.

I like the OS and all but i think its to much to do even the smallest things. I cant even watch videos on youtube because i cant get the flash player to install.

I really just wanted a back up OS and i hate torrenting OS's since it takes 800 years to get the damn thing cracked and receive updates, plus theres always 10 fucked up files in the download. So i might just erase Ubunu and download XP and have dual boot XP and Vista.

Ive learned that Linux is not for new people.

Thinks for all the help Myriad. I love ya! :naughty:

shit happens, I'm running Xubuntu with DE(almost like beryl) and I have no problems.

although I am certain Beryl still wont properly work properly on anything other then gentoo, it was a good try.

I'll let ya know if I ever get that working on my system

I suggest you all stop relying so much on GUI and read some linux tutorials / e-books and get really familiar with the command line. If you try to jump in something technical on linux that you don't know how to do, you will fail. It's not like windows.

That damn Grub fucked me up.

I was trying to delete Ubuntu, but it left Grub on there. So when i go to try and start up windows it gave me an error. Long story short, i had to re-install. Not that im mad or anything since i was planning on doing it within the next couple of weeks but the fact that my fucking back-up didnt work. I think i'd have to burn them to dvd's but its over 30gb of shit so i just said fuck it and now im re-installing everything.

At least now i have a clean install so no spyware or viruses that i didnt no about are on here anymore.

You prolly could have booted off the Ubuntu disk and removed it :/

I tried that but gparted never loaded. Even before i installed Ubuntu it wouldnt load. I let it set there for 10 or 15 minutes and nothing.

And don't let this experience stop you from using linux. Its a great OS. Maybe ubuntu is not the right distro for you.

Like i said im not mad, only a little at my back up files, But i should have never done it. If it aint broke dont fix it. I was just screwing around and wanted a very basic and simple OS but Ubuntu isnt it (at least till i learn ALOT about it) But i dont need a 2nd OS i just wanted one for a backup and something to mess with while i wasnt gaming or just bored.

My PC is pretty much back to how it was. Im just missing a few games i need to install (about 10 more) a few CD's and like 10 videos i downloaded. No biggy, and ill probably wait till i move anyways since ill be getting the 6mb connection instead of whatever Comcast fucked me over with, its at 56kbs DL speed :(.

As long as you have the Ubuntu boot-able OS. Thats a secondary OS in case of catastrophe.

If you ever try it again. Maybe a little reading on operating and controlling the system can help.

And there is another that is fairly simple to use.

Try : http://www.slackware.com/

If you're looking around for other distro's of linux : http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com
