All retailers who sell PS3's/Xbox360's have the ability to check the serials, the reason being is that if they try to return a PS3 with a serial that was sold six months ago Sony is going to tell them to fuck off. Your best bet is to do a return on a very busy day. Also, if you do purchase a PS3 and try to return the old broken one, make sure you use cash to buy it. Also, when they ask for your information give them fake info.
