Posted March 3, 200817 yr So now i have questions like always. Tomorrow im going to a few places and look for a new TV (im very excited but very pissed at the same time) So anyone have recommendations on the type of tv to get? Plasma or Lcd? I had a 52inch Rca that lasted about 5 years and im sure its the bulb but after reading reviews and stuff nobody really had anything good to say about it, plus its just time to get a new one. Suggestions? Im looking for a 42" to 50" And the only places im sure are there is Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Circuit City.
March 3, 200817 yr Author Jedi Pimp;549153']General rules... I would buy a LCD set over a Plasma. Now that they are making LCDs over 40 inches I don't see the benefit of Plasma anymore. Also, Plasma resolution information is sometimes misleading and you may not end up with true HDTV resolutions. Make sure you get one that has 120hz or higher processor. Your pictures will be much better. You can get 24 fps viewing which is what they use in films. This will help eliminate a 3:2 pulldown formating that occurs. Make sure you get TV with 1920 x 1080 resolution. This will allow you to get true 1080i or 1080p picture. You will be able to take full advantage of your Blu-ray DVD or PS3 images. Also, most HDTV signals are in 1080i resolution. Make sure it has HDMI inputs, and as many as possible. This is usually not a problem because most of the new sets come with at least one HDMI input. Avoid backlighting its fucking ghey., Some TVs have a color lighting system on the back of their TVs to make it look like its floating or some shit...its fucking lame and why pay extra for it. I would recommend a SONY XBR4 series LCD HDTV. They make them up to 52 inches. Low prices at Best Buy or Costco, etc. Thanks! I am leaning towards an LCD more than plasma. Ive heard horror stories of burn ins and such on plasmas. My budget, i would like to keep under 1300 or 1400 and hopefully that'll include an extended warranty.
March 3, 200817 yr If you have a Costco near you get your TV there. They have a 2 year return policy. Oh, wait, nevermind. http://blog.tmcnet.com/beyond-voip/entertainment/costco-amends-tv-return-policy.asp Well at least I got in on it while it was there.
March 3, 200817 yr If you have a Costco near you get your TV there. They have a 2 year return policy. i heard it changed to 3 months
March 3, 200817 yr Either way, 90 days is fucking insane for a return policy. Plus, assuming what I've just read is true, they double the warranty on it. Jedi Pimp;549167']SHIT!!!! Peep this deal on a 52 inch 1080p set http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11245206&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US Fuck, that's a nice set. I bet it's bright as all hell to. I'm stuck with my 42" rear projection.
March 3, 200817 yr Author That is a nice tv. Only bad thing is that i forgot i got rid of all my regular credit cards so now all i have is a Circuit City, Walmart, and Target card. So im stuck with CC basically. So ive looking. ANd i found a few online at the store nearest me. The first is a 50" Plasma for 1200$ http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=193181&c=1 The 2nd is a 47" Lcd for 1500$ http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-Regza-47-LCD-HDTV-47HL167/sem/rpsm/oid/184600/catOid/-12869/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do Ideas?
March 3, 200817 yr I'd go with the Plasma. It seems like you're getting a good deal on a pretty nice TV. It's obviously not the best of the best, but it fits well into your budget and it's also larger than the other TV for less cost.
March 3, 200817 yr Jedi Pimp;549178']Negative! Plasma = 720p resolution. Get the Toshiba ahh i didn't actually read the links. forgot all the HD channels broadcast in 1080i now

It's obviously not the best of the best, but it fits well into your budget and it's also larger than the other TV for less cost. If you're looking for an LCD panel, <42" is your best price range. For plasma, anything >50" is usually the same price as the 42" LCD. The problem is, though, LCD panels tend to last longer than Plasma's. Also, that 42" LCD panel is going to have higher spec's (higher resolution, more inputs, better color/options, ect.).
March 3, 200817 yr captain, man wtf do you do for a living? seems like every 2 weeks you come here asking how/what/where you should get something, and it's always a good chunk of cash! :P
March 3, 200817 yr Author captain, man wtf do you do for a living? seems like every 2 weeks you come here asking how/what/where you should get something, and it's always a good chunk of cash! :P Trust me, i dont make a lot of money. Ive been in debt (not a whole lot) for the last 5 years. Plus with credit the way it is nowadays you can get pretty much anything with no interest. Ex: My old school game thread. Almost all on my paypal card and no interest. Im wanting an Lcd but 400$ more kinda sucks. They have another 47" thats 1080i or p but its out of stock everywhere. Plus as far as the HD stuff goes i really dont plan on getting a Blu Ray player within the next year or 2 if that. And i dont even have cable. I just download all my stuff so im not huge on the quality for the most part. But im going there tomorrow so im sure they'll have other deals. Thats just what i found on their site.
March 3, 200817 yr Frankly I have a 60in plasma and it's great and all.... But next time round I'll probably buy an LCD for no other reason that they dont run as hot and also they're less fragile. With the plasma it's a crap shoot when you are going to be moving it(from house to house) without the original packaging. Though I will say a plasma screen is smoother in terms of the picture.
March 3, 200817 yr Author Jedi Pimp;549187']OK so let me get this straight we have gone from... Captain Morgan: I had a 52 inch TV Captain Morgan: I'm looking for new 42 or 50 inch Plasma/LCD TV Captain Morgan: I want to keep it under $1330/$1400 dollars Captain Morgan: I only have stupid fucking store credit cards Captain Morgan: Oh I see a $1200 Plasma and a $1500 LCD what should I get Captain Morgan: I've been in debt for past 5 years Captain Morgan: I buy shit on Credit Cards cause its interest free Captain Morgan: The TV I want is out of stock everywhere Captain Morgan: I'm not planning on buying Blu-ray for antoher year or two Captain Morgan: I don't have cable Captain Morgan: Quality doesn't matter to me I d'l all my shit Fucking fagg0t get off my forum. Why even ask for advise. Here is some advice, go buy tube set at your local swap meet that will fit nicely into the spot vacated by your 52 in RCA piece of shit rear projection set that was prob a hand-me-down from family member So that means i shouldnt have a nice big tv for anything i might get in the future? I said im not getting blu ray for a year or 2 because of the prices. And im guessing thats how long it will take for them to drop. I dont have cable atm because when we were going to get it the fucker had to leave and we never heard back so now we're deciding who to go with. Plus i have roommates who DONT have HDtv's so im sure they dont what HD cable. What does me having only store credit have to do with anything? Besides limiting my options? Quality doesnt matter as far as tv goes. I love watching movies, and also playing games. Thats the main reason why im getting it. The rest i really dont understand why you quoted me on it. So thanks for the help....i guess.
March 3, 200817 yr Jedi Pimp;549197']You're fucking retarded. Read the thread. He can't shop there because 1) he has no normal credit card' date=' or if he does, it has no avail balance to use; 2) He's a struggling poor fucker who lives with other people; and 3) He's a Jew[/quote'] Barring mental retardation, Costco is still the shit.
March 3, 200817 yr On a side note, getting a warranty isn't necessarily a good thing, just more money for the store. Warranty for a few years, add another 200 - 300 dollars. Cost to fix it, sans warranty, 200 - 400 dollars; so you're spending that much anyway and if you bought the warranty, you are assuming it will break. Most (if not all stores) by default have a 30 day return policy. Depends on the store and the items too. IMHO, I pocket the warranty for booze, I do a lot of research on the product, see what the issues are, and what the manufacturer's ways of doing things are. Play the odds and take your chances. Good luck:cool:

Good luck:cool: The two year warranty from Costco was free, too many people abused it so they changed it to a 90 return policy and they double and match the warranty from the vendor. So, if you buy a TV and it has a 1 year parts/labor you now have 2 years parts/labor. Extended warranty's aren't all bad, they're very effective on inexpensive (<150$) electronics that tend to break. When you can spend 10% of the product cost and get it replaced it's not all bad. Plus, it allows you to beat the shit out of it and not care. Most of the store's the sell these (excluding Best Buy, they try their best to not honor the extended plans) don't really care what condition it's returned in, they send it back to the vendor and get credit for it. You do, however, have to keep an eye out at stores like Best Buy, honoring a $150 plan on a two year old $1500 TV is not cost effective as the vendor probably won't accept it back.

Plus i got rid of my normal cards to get out of debt and i got the store cards for the last Black Friday. I need to get a normal card but im impatient and want a TV now and dont feel like waiting 2 weeks to get it. If i was a Jew i wouldnt be spending 1000$ on a new Tv. Anyways, thats a good point about the warranty. I didnt get one with my old one and it was fine till now. But i still love you Jedi, ill probably go ahead and spend 2 or 300 extra for the 1080 so im ready for anything in the future. Even tho im a poor Jew. :tear:

The extended warranty's are usually date of purchase full coverage warranty's which are usually more expensive or a true 'extended' warranty which can be anywhere from +1-3 years on top of the vendor warranty. The lower you go, the cheaper they are.
March 3, 200817 yr Author HOLY SHIT! So im sitting here at my PC watching There will be Blood, and all of a sudden POP POP POP like firecrackers are going off and i look at my TV real quick and see little flickers of light where the speakers are behind the little mesh covering. So im guessing my Tv is totally fucked now. But what do you think would do that? I just got a new Surround Sound system with a dvd player. But would that do that? Or maybe the surge protector?

Sounds like the bulb just broke. Unplug it, if you're a bitch give it a good 20 minutes so all of the energy dissipates. Open it up and see if the bulb blew up.
March 3, 200817 yr Author Jedi Pimp;549217'] This wouldn't have happened if you had a $35,000 security system. You would have been guarded. BAN!!! No but that scared the shit out of me. It popped 3 times so do they have 3 bulbs? Its just weird that i get that Dvd player and this happens. Ill probably get a half decent power strip just to be safe. Oh well i get a new tv. YAY!
March 3, 200817 yr Author I went to Circuit and Best Buy today looking around. They both had decent deals. Circuit had a bad ass Mistubishi 65" DLP 1080p for a little under 1700$.LINK The only other one i found i liked was a 42" Toshiba. LINK Im leaning towards a 42" now that ive looked at them and it seems about the perfect size for what im looking for.
